I am going up to Rochester for college on Saturday and I will have a car my freshman year. So what are fun things to do around Rochester?
If you mean Rochester, NY, absolutely nothing. RIT or UR?
Look up a restaraunt called “Nick Tahoe’s” (2260 Lyell Ave.) and get a garbage plate (trust me), preferably late at night after doing things that I hope fellow posters will be along with shortly. For your sake, I hope it’s still there.
well, there’s hiking. LOT’S of it. I’d tell you about my favorite places, but then they’d be swarmed. But basically (dunno how much you know about the geology of upstate NY,) anywhere there’s a small to mid-sized stream if you follow it long enough (in the hills) they’ll be at least a small waterfall, due to glacial action. Now we’re sadly narrowed in these prospects by those non-posted areas, but still…
I’m going to RIT friedo. fiddle what is a garbage plate
Hey, I go to RIT too. What are you majoring in? A garbage plate is a very greasy mixture of macaroni salad, hamburger/cheeseburger, fries and onions. It actually tastes a lot better than it sounds. I think they offer hotdog and italian saugsage plates too.
Things to do in the area include Six Flags, Jillians, which is a sports bar with a bowling alley and lots of arcade games (its only open to people of all ages on certain nights though), the dollar theater (I can’t remember its real name right now, but its one town over from RIT and it shows movies that are out of the regular theaters but not on video yet for reduced rates), there’s also this snow tubing place that I can’t remember the name of either :smack: . Unfortunately Rochester is a pretty boring place. If I think of any other things I’ll let you know. I’ll also get back to you with the real names of the places I mentioned if you’re interested.
Buffalo.
Buffalo.
Seriously, a lot of students from Rochester attended SUNY-University at Buffalo, SUNY-Buffalo State College, and Canisius College, because Buffalo has a reputation as being something of a party town with far more extracurricular activities than Rochester. The city has several active nightlife districts, including the Theatre District/Chippewa Street area downtown, the bohemian Allentown and Elmwood Village neighborhoods, and University Heights.
Neato. Are you majoring in CS? Say hi to Hank for me. He’s the schmuck in charge of the CS dept. (At least he was when I was there.)
The garbage plate gave me diarhea for a week.
I lived in Rochester for several years. I gotta agree with those who said “nothing”.
Well, if you want to know the things to see:
1.) The Falls of the Genessee. This is what built Rochester (free hydro power for the flour mills, hence “Flour City”. It only became “Flower City” years later). But try to find them! Worth it, if you can.
2.) Rochester Museum and Science Center and Strasenburg Planetarium – my favorite thing in the City.
3.) Strong Museum – if you’re into dolls and furniture.
4.) Rochester art Museum – associated with the University, but not near it. A small city Art Museum, but they sometimes have good exhibits.
5.) New York State Barge Canal – sounds pretty dull, but it has a nice cycling path. And this was the Erie Canal, going right through the center of town at one point. There;s still one of the original locks behind the Super Wegman’s down on Monroe. After they re-routed the canal south of town, the depression was filled with railroad tracks and became a “subway” (One of the stations is still there at the bridge by the main Library downtown. The canal used to cross the Genessee on that bridge). So few people rode it that they shut it down, making Rochester one of the few cities to have a subway, then get rid of it.
6.) George Eastman House/International Museum of Photography/Dryden Theater – after the flour mills faded, this was Eastman Kodak’s town. Still is.
7.) Joseph Smith House/Marvin Harris Home/Sacred Grove/Hill Cumorah Pageant – You have to go a bit out of town to see this, but if you’re of that bent of mind, it’s worth it. Mormonism got its start near Rochester, and you can visit founder Joseph Smith’s home. If you’re lucky enough to be there when the Hill Cumorah Pageant is going on, go see it. It’s free and it will blow your mind – it’s like a parallel universe.
8.) Seabreeze – when I lived there, Seabreeze amusement park up near Lake Ontario had all the rides and things. I assume and hope it’s still there.
as far as RIT goes, it is going to be as much fun as you make it.
there is stuff to do there all the time, it is just hidden.
When you get to town, you will want to check out:
Nick Tahoe’s- Downtown, you will probably have some bouts of vomiting and need about four pairs of underwear afterwards, but it will be wort it.
Abbots Frozen Custard, it is not custard, it is ice cream, and really good.
An Amerks Game, there is nothing like minor league hockey.
Park Ave, and before it gets too cold. Before all the honeys are bundled up for the winter.
And if you want the best job on the RIT campus, apply for Tech Crew and tell Rich you know Herm.
** Omega ** I am going into CS. Can you tell me who the good profs are?
It looks like there are no night spots around Rochester, which is good for my G.P.A. If I have a car, which I will, does this improve the number of fun places I can go.
The weird thing is I really like Rochester. It’s one of my favorite cities. There are good people, nice stores, good neighbourhoods, great public schools, etc. But when people ask about tourist type attractions, I can never think of anything that special. So I guess I could sum up Rochester by saying it’s a nice place to live, but I wouldn’t want to visit there.
Well I’m a biotech major, so I won’t be able to help with teachers in the CS department but let me know which liberal arts teachers you have.

These are some links to professor ratings websites. You won’t be able to log into the first one until you get your RIT name and password though.
Having a car will make it easier to find things to do if you’re willing to travel, but there’s a free campus shuttle that will take you to the mall, movie theaters and the grocery store. If you’re 19, you could always go to the clubs and casino in Canada. There’s also a night club near called Pulse that has an under 21 night if you like that kind of thing. If you decide to go driving around, make sure you stay out of the inner city late at night. The suburb where RIT is located is very safe but all the stores except Target and Wegmans close before 10 pm.
I was in Rochester for the first time last week on business. My observations:
-
I counted 32 golf courses on my map. What’s up with that?
-
I went to a store called Beers of the World. I was in heaven.
-
Beer is expensive in New York. WTF? Is it heavily taxed?
The Henrietta WalMart used to be open 24 hours. Always handy to know if you need to buy a lawn mower at three in the morning.
