I’m not immediately finding the thread(s) (I think because they changed their username at one point, maybe during the Discourse switchover), but we’ve done this one before. Maybe even twice before - it’s a recurring complaint/inquiry. Their intermittent bursts of hyper-specific-cluster-of-history-questions habit seems to really agitate some people some of the time, fascinate a few people some of the time and most posters are indifferent. But it’s been going on for quite a long time on a myriad of random historical topics.
Since I sorta like little tidbits of historical minutiae myself, I don’t particularly mind their eccentric little habit. I mean the last one I answered turned out to be somewhat easily googleable with a little digging and if you had the right idea about where to dig, but it is an interesting enough little bit of history if you get the specific reference. In this case the reference he was fishing for was in relation to the Houston Riot of 1917, which he really should have led with. There would have been less head-scratching.
I sometimes get those two posters confused, because their participation style is similar.
At one time, I may have thought that kind of questioning would have fallen afoul of “no homework assistance”, but that’s not a thing, and I don’t think the subject matter was literally someone’s homework.
You’re probably thinking of davidmich, which is most likely the previous name of Octagon. The Pit thread did not go well for people complaining about his posting then.
If anyone wants to complain about Octagon’s posting, it’s probably a good idea to read that thread first for some other viewpoints. Summarized by the late Colibri:
In fact, Colibri was a one-man wrecking crew in that thread starting at post 88. Man, I miss that guy.
