What's good on a hot pretzel?

I was in the mall the other day and got a hot pretzel.
She asked me twice if I wanted butter on it, and was shocked when I didn’t. Then she offered me six topings, none mustard. I had to ask for mustard, and got a little packet from under the counter. Has that gone out of style?
Are pretzels the same as toast or bagels now?

Mustard is the best on hot pretzels. Anything else is just wrong. Mustard is how it should be.

Heresy!! Fonz, you are obviously a sophisticated person with impeccable taste, and this mall pretzel bimbo a mere philistine. Obviously, the only proper topping for a pretzel is mustard, preferable spicy German mustard, but even regular old yellow is better than (shudder) butter.

The choices were a schmear of cheese, butter, jam, chocolate (I hope it tastes like chocolate donuts), honey, and rock salt. At least they got the last one right.

I’ll agree that a spicy mustard is perfect for a pretzel, but I’ve also liked cheese dip with them too. Nothing else though, has to be one of those two things.

Chocolate??? On a pretzel??? Yeccch!

Why, oh why, is it that people can’t just stick to simple things like salt and mustard? I mean, if you want something that tastes like a chocolate donut, get a chocolate donut. In the meantime, just let us have our pretzels with rock salt and let us have mustard to put on them.

Sorry for the rant, but my friends in Philly would hang their heads in shame if they knew that someone, somewhere, was deluded enough to put chocolate on a hot pretzel.

And the chocolate should be more like fudge than doughnut icing. Thick and not too sweet. Mmmmm.

The iced pretzels form a pretzel chain called Auntie Anne’s (i don’t know how popular they are) are excellent. The cinnamon/sugar pretzels kick a nice slice of ass as well.

Cheese dip is good…rock salt is usually the default topping…I also like a certain kind of garlic sauce. But mustard? I dunno…

Cheese or mustard with rock salt. Sheesh! What are people thinking? (Chocolate???!!–I think I’m going to be sick!)

I wanted to second Lucretia’s high opinion of your good taste, [picture voting in Fonz’s excellent judgement]. Then, of course the only normal thing on a pretzel is salt first, and then mustard. The spicier the better! Anything else is: well, too substandard to think about!! :wink:
