Yes, there are still international flights now (the end of April) - for instance, within Europe.
Who’s still traveling, and why? What happens at the destination - in most countries, won’t they be put in a two-week quarantine? How certain is it that they’ll be able to get a return flight home?
I posted before but the number of passengers into Taipei is a tiny fraction of normal and mostly consists of Taiwanese returning from overseas. It had mostly been students.
People here (middle Europe) are trying to figure out how to get back to Great Britain. Flying is the simplest.
Why?
Because someone needs them to travel. Elderly parent living on their own, had a accident. Can’t go home unless someone’s there.
There are medical professionals traveling. And then there are some people, like my classmate who finished the Alaska fishing season, who just want to go home. There are still people who are stuck some place other than where they want to be.
However, people aren’t traveling for funerals. They’re not traveling just to be back with family. Any travel is going to be one-way, because once you get there, you’ll have to stay put.
It’s even possible to fly from here to the U.S. Just one flight a week, when normally there are approximately a dozen a day from 2 different airports.
I hadn’t realized this, but it’s actually not possible to send mail to many countries right now. There’s a big restriction on package sizes to almost all countries, and even domestic mail.
My neighbour just flew home from Thailand last night. No problem getting a flight, cost was actually lower, connections slightly less convenient, but manageable . Scrambled to make quarantine arrangements, but that’s just because he’s a disorganized fellow.
He doesn’t seem to have had any great difficulty at all.
