I’ve heard a few second-hand descriptions of what it’s like being a professional athlete ‘on the road’, but what is the experience actually like?
Among the famous, reasonably attractive, millionaire pro athletes who are married, just how common is sexual infidelity? Do their wives just accept this, understanding that it ‘comes with the territory’??
Also, if you’re one of the famous, reasonably attractive, millionaire athletes, when you go to your hotel room after the game are there really attractive women lined up waiting for you? Would you be expected to take them on a date, or do you get to have sex with them immediately?? Do all of the players get laid, even the ones who sit on the bench, or is it just the ones who are famous???
I used to work with a guy who played in the NHL for three years as a backup on the Boston Bruins in the mid 1980’s. There were always a few religious types who were good boys but the rest of them got it when ever they wanted it. They refered to the women who went after them as “cougars.” The cougars were pros at it. They knew that when the Bruins came to town they would stay in Hotel A and when the Blackhawks came to town they would stay in Hotel B. There were players who had regular cougars in each town and didn’t even know their names. Even the backups pretty much had their pick.
There’s not a rule or anything about this, it just depends on the player. Some of them are scum, some are faithful, just like anyone else, I guess. A couple of ex-wives wrote a book a few years back that said every single NBA player cheats, for what it’s worth. I doubt it, but there’s no doubt that a lot of them do. They are there for the sex.
All the players who are recognizable as players. For the most part, it’s just about the money and the prestige, and there are very few NBA players who aren’t multimillionaires.
