Any way to have the software identify whom we’re quoting?
Regarding the resizing the window issue. Either that’s been fixed or I was seeing things before. It’s not a problem now.
Well, actually, in this window it is, but that might be just because I tried shrinking the window after the form fields were opened. I’ll play around with it.
Regarding the marking of visited links, my browser IS set up to show them dimmed, but that function hasn’t been working with the new boards. (It was a very useful function prior to the switch)
Regarding the “# of times viewed” indicator, it could function as a deterrent if you posted something that 300 people looked at but only 2 felt compelled to offer an answer for. Not a particularly reliable indicator of the reasons that could happen though.
All your suggestions and hints are real helpful, but right now our technical folks got their hands full with getting the system fully set up and everything converted from the old installation.
We’re gonna ask you to hold off and be cool until we get everything up and running like it should be.
If there’s a bug, please tell us soonest; that’s what we’re really interested in right now, the big things that aren’t working right.
If it’s some stylistic thing, hold your water, okay?
I should also tell you that we’re flexible on a lot of things, but we’re not going to overly hack the system, so some of your suggestions and/or complaints might not get addressed even when we DO get finished up here.
But in the meantime, while we’re still unpacking, don’t start yelling at us about the curtains, please?
your humble TubaDiva
Well, as you can see, he’s back. Sorry for the whining.
Oh, baby, baby, I need this function. This OUGHT to say “originally posted by Monty”. Why doesn’t it? Please, please, please take pity on us remembering-names-challenged people and do whatever you have to, to restore that function. I’ll even donate as many chickens as it takes for the sacrifice.
It’s too hard to remember exactly whose anus you’re redesigning.
Also, on the pre-changeover threads, like from Friday morning, all the formerly tidy quotes have all deteriorated into gonzo <BLOCK QUOTE Viridiana 123456789 E.T. phone home > messages. Figuring out who quoted what and when suddenly takes the skills of Sherlock Holmes. Are those ever going to go back the way they were?
Also, off and on all day, when I look at the Pit main list, sometimes the lists for Number of times looked at and Number of Posts are switched, that is, it’s like 100 people posted but only 14 people looked. I thought, “that can’t be right…?”
But I LOVE the linoleum in here…
Tuba - unless you’re getting emails to the contrary, I think people are just responding to the OP, not bitching. As I am about to do.
I like the new board a lot, except for a couple of things mentioned above - and that the rolleyes smiley is no longer animated (It was the only animation I liked) I like the “times viewed” column (although now I will know just how lame people think my topics are!)
Shayna - the old software also required you to start a new browser if the thread was over a certain length. Check out F3 if you don’t believe me.
The topics calendar seems to be set at 20 days. If I reset it to 2 days and leave, when I come back later it’s set at 20 days again. How do I set it permanently?
slythe, you can set it in your profile.
I was wondering this too.
Looks like there’s gonna be a bit of getting used to…
I believe that if you uncheck the option in your profile about using the default view, that might help.
It’s only been counting views since the new software was installed, which was only last night. So old threads are going to have more posts than views.
slythe so sorry.
slythe should have checked first.
Well if everyone checked first, us Computer Science majors would get paid less. And that would suck.
I agree, Tuba - I think most of us are just posting things as we notice them for your future reference. And just in case something is a glitch that you need to know about - I’m so computer illiterate I wouldn’t know a glitch if it bit me in the ass. I always assume there’s something wrong with my computer!
One good thing is that the board is really, really fast - I keep forgetting that I don’t have time for a game of freecell while I’m waiting on MPSIMS to load! Looks like the new board is going to be great!
Ok , maybe I’m just too drunk but where is the page which shows logged in users ? I cann’t find it anywhere.
Never mind . Found out the answer at : http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=11514
Sorry if I sound a bit frazzled; it’s been a long couple of days here.
We just really really want all this to work well for everybody; we want to get everything in the best shape possible . . . and this is such new software and we want to work out every bug we can find in as short a time as possible. . . and little things just bug me sometimes.
I’m really sorry.
your humble TubaDiva
Hey, don’t sweat it, Tuba. While all of you are working your fingers to the bone slaving over hot keyboards for our benefit, we’re just sitting back and nitpicking everything to pieces . …
Makes you want to borrow Notthemama’s brick, don’t it?
We really, really do appreciate all of your hard work. We’ve already invented a new game based on the ‘Views’ feature - 'Start a disgusting and/or porno sounding thread title, and count how many times it’s ‘viewed’without a response.’
Some psych or sociology student should get a paper out of that . . .
Okay, I guess this wouldn’t be considered a ‘bug’, so I’ll post it here. I guess everybody will figure this out on their own after awhile, anyway.
The subject line does not appear in the topic review. I’ve noticed that a lot of people use the subject line as part of their post, and this comment is lost in the topic review. This sorta interferes with quoting that for a response, and makes reading the topic review rather confusing sometimes. I thought an entire post had disappeared in the topic review because I couldn’t find the comment I wanted to reply to!
Just something to keep in mind when making a post - don’t put anything important in that subject line without repeating it in the body of the message.
Complaint, for future reference:
I don’t care for the way after you Submit your Reply, it takes you all the way back to the Forum, rather than back to the thread itself. With all the confusion, posts popping up in the middle of threads, etc., I’d rather be taken back directly to the thread to make sure my post did in fact post where it was supposed to.
Coosa says the board is now “really, really fast.” Notthemama wants to know what Coosa has been feeding her hamster. Naughty Coosa! tsk-tsk…
P.S. to MandaJo: Gosh, I’ve spent hours with “search” and I can’t find a thread called “My Big Penis” anywhere. Post a link, woudja?
ROFLMAO!

I’d like to second coosa’s comment. We may be a vocal bunch of malcontents, but in general, I think everyone appreciatted the hard work y’all have put in to get the new board up.
My current favorite new thing is that I can set the board for Eastern time! So now I don’t have to think about converting time zones. (I know, Central to Eastern ain’t hard. I’m lazy.)
And GD is BACK!!! I love you all!!! runs to buy chocolate for Tuba and beer for the board techs
