What's something that people claim happens a lot, but you have rarely, or never, witnessed it?

That’s why they caused such a traffic jam. “For crying out loud, dudes, you need to start moving!”.

I am assuming that “peloton” is the plural for a group of bikers. Just like you might call a group of Karens a “cacophony”?

A group of bicycles riding together is called a peloton. That is why the company used that word for its product.

I did not know that.

Well all it really takes is one bike to slow them down. I approve!

This happens pretty regularly on Huron River Drive, a scenic, twisty 2-lane road in SE Michigan that follows a river between Dexter and Ann Arbor. It’s very popular with bicyclists; if you encounter a courteous pair of riders, they’ll transition from side-by-side to single file when you approach from the rear in your motor vehicle, but if you have a whole herd of riders, they’re often more brazen about refusing to move over so you can get by. Since the road is twisty, there’s only one official/legal passing zone on the entire nine-mile stretch of road, and there aren’t even many places for an illlegal-but-safe(ish) pass. If I’m on that road it’s almost always because I’m on my motorcycle, so my power and smallness afford me more opportunities to get by them, but many times I’ve seen cars get trapped behind inconsiderate groups like this. I’m surprised there aren’t more instances of road rage.

It’s a common road hindrance here in suburban Atlanta: usually groups of young professionals who see their athletic verve to be integral to their business acumen. Their world is divided between winners and losers. My word is an undivided forbearance of petty obstacles, although I do note how likely a cop will pull over a white guy on a $2K bicycle versus a black guy in a $2K car.

If you catch any bike racing event like the Tour de France on TV, you’ll hear the word “peleton” used a lot. I used to casually follow the Tour during the Armstrong v Ulrich years so got plenty of exposure to the word (though I don’t bike myself.)

It’s French for our “platoon,” so no surprise. However, a Castilian co-worker apprised me of its similarity to “pelota,” meaning ball/testicle.

It wasn’t covered in the French I took, but from what I can tell, peloton (excuse the misspelling in my last post) is also a word for a small ball in French.

But what a wonderful world it would be if it had.

I saw that.

If you can get away with it then urine luck

Certainly no guns were involved, and no physical threat; but I have (in upstate New York) had pushback – people I knew slightly bugging me in a grocery store (“Don’t go into a bank like that!” – me, “Have you been in a bank lately? They’ve got a great big sign on the door telling you to wear a mask!”); also people starting to recite, supposedly to each other but in exaggeratedly loud voices, every bit of nonsense about covid not being real, masks being bad for you, etc., etc., etc. (one time that latter happened in a hallway while waiting to vote in 2021 off-term elections; the fools weren’t really avoidable, but I didn’t answer them as I was sure they were hoping it would blow up into an argument.)

I’ve also heard people grumble about being asked to wear a mask; and, when they were being required even at outdoor farmers’ markets before vaccination was available, had one customer leave the market rather than put one on – as well as had to argue a great deal with one vendor family to get them to wear theirs.

So that level of stuff definitely happens. I also very much doubt that pulling a gun is remotely common; though, considering the “reasons” that some people occasionally do start shooting, I’d unfortunately not be astonished if it’s happened on rare occasions.

There are Black cycling clubs in Atlanta, just saying it’s not only a white sport.

I agree, but out on the suburbs “we can blow through stop signs if there’s 30 of us” is something white cyclists believe but the Black people I know would be wary of.

It’s the complete opposite here in NYC. When the weather is nicer, many times I have seen mobs of Black cyclists racing down the street, completely blocking traffic and ignoring all traffic lights and pedestrians. Both motorbike clubs as well as hundreds of regular bicycles.

Today’s mail brought me a letter of apology, and a $5 gift card.

I have of late seen black motorcyclists (I know this because they aren’t wearing helmets) racing their bikes up major roads, on the back wheel only. Because it’s just been in my part of town, I do wonder if I’m seeing the same 2 or 3 men over and over again. Yeah, the race doesn’t matter, but I won’t be surprised to hear about a (near)-fatal crash any time soon, if they keep it up long enough.

In Colorado, 95+% of cyclists seem to believe that they have an absolute right to disobey any and all traffic laws.

As an ad agency art director, I designed a lot of billboards. Preparing for a big pitch to a client, I was “mocking up” a dozen different billboards (not actual size:).

One of the women I worked with kept trying to get me to make “the first ever ‘Magic Eye Billboard’!”

I can still hear her laughing: “Just think about that… yeah, I have a dark sense of humor…”

I’m a hacker but when I was in Japan it was a common occurrence to see that. I golfed weekly with a guy who shot around 90 to 92 so he often shot under 90.

I was in in two groups, one for foreigners and the other mostly Japanese, and was in an industry where people golfed.Japanese businessmen take golf seriously.

So, it just depends on the type of golfers you hang out with.
