I’ve had this strange, metallic scent in my nose for almost a week now; it’s a little like old pennies. Nothing much has changed in my life–the weather’s turned colder, but the humidity hasn’t changed much. I don’t smoke. I’m not taking any medications, although I did come off the pill about a month ago. The only other time this happened to me was when I was taking a chromium picolinate supplement. Eventually it got so annoying I laid off the supplement and the symptom went away. I know I’m not sick or anything, I’d just like some theories as to what would cause this.
Does anyone else have this strange experience from time to time?
…but when I get bonked in the nose, I get a metallic taste/scent thing going. I heard it was very tiny blood blessels breaking and some of the blood was being absorbed/breathed and that was the taste/smell of the blood. It wasn’t enough to see, but just enough to smell.
Some blood never entered the exterior nose cavities, but it was up there somewhere.
The metal smell is there, but obscure, right? Does your nose feel kind of clear too?
In any event, starting/stopping many medications can cause nose bleeds and such, so you might want to consider that you have a trace of a nose bleed. Again, not enough to see, but just enough to get into those tiny sensory perceptors.
(I’ve been hit in the nose more than a few times playing ice hockey. I can smell it now)
Philster must be right, Haemoglobin (the molecule in red blood cells) contains iron.
Slightly off the subject, but when I put a pencil or something a few millimeteres away from the bridge of my nose, I sometimes get this wierd pain that starts to build up in the bridge of my nose, but I dont always get it. Am I mad or what?
You have to hold it there and move it up and down your nose a bit.
Philster, you may be right. It does smell a little like blood (unlike most women, I have a lot of iron in my blood). However, during the morning nose-blowing ritual, there’s no evidence of anything like a minor nosebleed.
The scent is somewhat obscure and very internal. That is, if a scent can be said to be localized, mine feels like it’s almost between my eyes. You’re right, my sinuses and nose are totally clear right now, and I can smell external scents.
I was thinking…“Mmmmm…bloood”
You won’t see any blood, it’s way up there. It’s in the very tissue that does the smellin’ !!! (imagine the big old cavity above your nose) Good ol’ clear breathin’ and that metal smell. Yeah. It’s blood. Hemaglobin… Iron that is, red gold…
C’mon…give me some points for nailin’ that in one post.
