What's The Best 2.1 Sound System (for under $100) You've Listened To?

I’m a low-budget audiophile and I bought this in 2000 for $40.

You will note in the cite that they are no longer available. CS makes something more up-to-date, a 4.1 for under $100. I’d love a review here to convince me I need more than the 2.1.

Tinkling highs, clear mid-range and adjustable bass. Transportable with DC in, 7W out with 1% thd (as I remember, I don’t have the specs). It’s perfect in a small living room in an apt building. Cranked well above cocktail party conversational level and just below the onset of distortion, the only neighbors who hear it are those walking past my front door. I’ve asked.

My only concession? The sub woofer is front and center on a pillow.

This thread is only happening because I moved to Hawaii in '03 and left the speakers with an old friend in CA. I moved to CO in '05 and she drove out for a visit last month and returned them.

I am awed.

What’s your story?

I had a 4.1 waaaay back when. Then I got tired of having to place a gazillion speakers around my office, so I went with a 2.1 when I upgraded. That was cool, but then hubby got 2 plain ol’ speakers - no sub woofer - for HIS new computer, and they sounded great AND he didn’t have to deal with a subwoofer under his desk.

I just upgraded a couple weeks ago, and got the 2 speaker deal. They sound great. I can’t tell the difference between them and the old set with the subwoofer.

Anyone want a 2.1 set? I’ll sell the old one, cheap!

So, upgraded to what?

Mods, please change OP title to 2 or 2.1 speakers.

I use these on my PC. No audiophile here. They sound good but only get used for streaming radio online so I don’t really crank them up.

The cords are only long enough to fit on a desk, they won’t reach across a room and the control pod needs a piece of double sided tape to stay in place.

ETA: They do what I want and I’m pleased with them.

This is my new setup.

This is what they replaced.

Another bonus: no feedback from my iPhone. The old system made tons of noise every time my phone was within a few feet.

I have the Bose Multimedia Companion 3 (mk 1) system. It’s only designed to sit on a desk with the PC, but I use it as my main stereo system in my living room, and it’s superb.

I have a pair of Yamaha YST M200SP speakers (2.0) that blow everything else I’ve tried away. They are probably 15 years old, I paid something like $70 for them, and everytime I listen to a good-quality audio source, I’m reminded once again why all of the 2.1 and 5.1 computer audio systems I’ve tried since paled in comparison.
