what's the best truck rental deal for an in-town move?

We’re moving next weekend, and having been fucked by U-haul several times, I’d like to go elsewhere. Who’s the cheapest or best for an in-town move? I’ve heard good things abuot Ryder, but they want $80 per day, which seems excessive.

I rented a 15’ truck from Budget Truck Rental for $39.95 + $0.80/mile. The whole thing was under $50 - plus they were out of 15’ trucks the day I rented mine, so I ended up with a 20’ truck for the same price.

For in-town moves, EnginNerd has nailed it - Budget is the way to go. It’s not hard to figure out why they’re the cheapest, and provide the best service. It’s because they do only in-town rentals. You can’t rent a truck from them in L.A. and drive it to New Orleans. As a result, they don’t have the U-Haul problem, where they never know what kind of trucks they’re going to have available on any given day (or at least they’ve never invested in the tracking system they’d need to make that work). Second, the rentals all tend to be one day, or maybe two, so, again, they pretty much know what kind of trucks they’re going to have available, give or take a couple. Third, the trucks don’t get nearly as beat-up, since they’re all doing low-mileage stuff.

I’m not sure I’d recommend Budget. It seems their trucks are mainly retired Ryder trucks around here unless they’re using that new yellow primer. Just had one in where I worked and it was in very very bad shape. I had to replace all the brake parts except for the master cylinder, as it wouldn’t stop unless you put it in neutral. It was way overdue for repair. It still needed suspension work when it left here, but they were too cheap to spring for it. In other words, take it easy if you rent one of them.

Never dealt with Budget, but I’ve rented trucks for intercity moves many times, and Ryder has always been far, far cheaper than U-Haul. That’s all I have to add.
