What's the best way to learn GIMP?

So I recently got GIMP 2 working on my computer, dived right in and sank like a stone. I think I may be basically still stuck in mid-nineties image manipulation programs; I’ve used stuff much better than MS Paint, but nothing with a significantly different interface. Using GIMP feels like going from a right-handed can opener to a left-handed unicycle. I can’t even figure out how to select the pen tool and scribble.

Is there a step-by-step tutorial out there?
