I was watching the soccer last night and noticed a fair bit of toilet paper on the field. I asked my flatmate what was the best way to throw a toilet paper roll. He suggested holding one end but I disagree.
How do these people get the paper to unravel so well? Do I need to hold one end and throw or will the dragging end of the paper aid the unravel process?? I imagine it is very different to throwing a party streamer as it is not as strong and unravels from the outside. Which way do I throw and how high? Do I need to put some spin on it, or maybe throw it end on end?
By ‘flatmate’ I’m assuming you’re not talking about that good U.S. of A toilet paper we have here. None the less, unravel a little and wrap around your throwing hand, and throw in an upward arching motion. I don’t think it even matters if you throw it roll side up or down, though I think roll side up with a forward spin will do it best. Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought one needed advice on this. I thought it was an innate trait all men were born with…
First unpick the first sheet and throw away the stuck-together bit (duh).
Hold the roll in the upturned palm of your hand with the end sheet uppermost, trailing over your fingers. You’re going to throw underarm.
Drop your hand to your side, then swing forwards briskly. As you approach the point at which the roll will leave your hand, jerk your hand back, perpendicular to the overall direction of the throw. This should put a fair bit of spin on it. The roll will then unroll nicely on the way down.
Remember to throw up, as well as out. An angle of about 45 degrees should give you the maximum range.
Just recently registered, and this is the first question I’ve seen that really requires my answer. What you really need to do is ask a 12 year old who hates his teacher.
There’s two camps of thought on this one; end over end, or spinning it.
End over end will get the toilet paper to unravel, but the chance of the paper tearing is great. You also run the risk of subjecting the roll to too much wind resistance. All in all, not your best bet.
Spinning it is the way to go. Holding it with a little bit of paper coming over the top of the roll over your hand towards your face (enough prep. phrases for ya?) is your best bet. By putting backspin on it when you throw allows for maximum ‘unrolling’.
As for how to throw, Just get some good loft on it. I’m sure someone else will be able to tell you the best degree of angle to maximize air time.
I ask not what you can do for me, but what you can do for me right now.
At last! I knew my misspent youth would pay off! I basically agree with TomH, but can recommend and additional technique. The underhand method works well for sheer length of paper unrolled, but if you need extra altitude for the tops of the pine trees, try the following technique:
Hold the roll in your throwing hand with about a foot of the loose end trailing over the back of your hand.
Toss the roll by using an exaggerated hook-shot toss. (If you’re British and don’t know basketball, ask around.)
Just as the roll is leaving your hand, let it slip off your fingertips and get some spin.
Don’t expect a huge amount to unroll. You’re basically counting on the trailing end to get caught in the top of the tree so that it unrolls on the way down. Hope this helps.

A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he’s pissed.
