What's the Big Deal with Privacy?

This is my first post in this forum, so I’ll try to be up to snuff.

Can you honestly say, in today’s time when there are so many wars being fought over old ideas, old ways, over the desire to say, “I’m right” and the use of brute force to prove it, that we as a society are ready for transparency? We do not have enough compassion and understanding for our fellow man to allow for a lack of privacy. Who’s idea of utopia would we follow? The church’s? Which one? The government? Again, which one? Can you be certain you have not done, said, thought something that would not go against any one of these authorities?

I have read books others find worthy of bon fires. I do not agree with organized religion, or big government. I would be afraid of being labeled an enemy of the state if any of our more popular agents of authority were to dictate the thoughts or actions I am allowed to take.

I do not think the government should be able to track what I read at my local library. What happens when you read a book they consider a likely proponent to terrorism? They come and violate your home, lock you up, follow you around, whatever, because you wanted to know how an airplane engine works, because you wanted to read the Koran to try to understand the opposing point of view? What will our end definition of terrorism be? IMO the lack of privacy would bring up more questions and fears then it would make me feel safe. I would not feel safe if I could not ponder and decide on my own merits.

As far as the question of drug testing goes, IMHO we waste too much time and resources chasing after the drug war. If you do not have a reason to suspect me of wrong doing why should I be required to prove I am not? I am not a big proponent of consensual crimes, and think more of my tax dollars should be spent on catching murderers, thieves, child molesters etc… Crimes that are detrimental to the safety of the person or property of another individual. If you want to poison yourself with drugs go right ahead, you are only hurting yourself. (I know the argument of how it hurts the family, friends, extending throughout society, and I don’t buy it. You do not have the right as an individual to be protected from everything that might cause you pain or discomfort in life, IMO.)

Would you want anyone to be able to pull up a file of that time you got an abortion because you thought it right at the moment? Do you really want the government/church/whomever to be able to judge you on everything you have ever done? None of us are that perfect or free of sin (in whichever form of sin/wrongdoing you believe in).

We’d like to thank Doctor Forbin for joining us this week, and wish him the best of luck in his continuing work with his “Colossus” supercomputer.

:stuck_out_tongue:

And thank him for not programming it to not have the same incomprehensible thick German accent that he does.
