So we’ve all opened soft drinks, tortilla chip bags, candy bar wrappers, etc., hoping to see that winning game piece. Pepsi is giving away a billion dollars, Aquafina gives away some cash amount if they spot you holding one of their bottles, McDonald’s Monopoly Game seems to pop up once every couple of years. With the huge amounts of product these companies are moving, you’d think that you, or someone you know, has won something larger than “20 oz. Pepsi Product”.
Not in my case.
So, what’s the biggest prize that YOU (or someone you know personally) have won in a product promotion?
I’ve got a winning ticket at home for a bag of candy. If I do send it off, I’ll be bringing the candy to the office, since the last thing I need is a bag of candy taunting me in my own house…
I won a radio promotion once for an all expense paid trip to the beach, $100, a load of Banana Boat products, T-shirts and some cool sunglasses. I was 14 at the time. My parents let me keep the T-shirts, sunglasses and the Banana Boat products. They made me put the $100 into my savings account and told me I couldn’t take the trip. I didn’t want it to go to waste so I started looking for somebody to give it to. My junior high school gym teacher at the time was just about to get married and I knew they were not going on a honeymoon for financial reasons. I gave her the trip and they had a blast.
I won $20 (or was it $25?) in the Pepsi/Star Wars find-the-gold-can promotion. They even sent me an empty, unopened, replacement gold Yoda can to replace the one I had to smash and send in to claim my prize.
I won a trip (airfare) to California from Coke.
I won a shotgun from Ducks Unlimited.
I won a huge tube float from 7-up.
I won a bicycle, three pair of binoculars, several t-shirts, 50 dollars worth of Eckrich meats, and a video of “North.”
I don’t do that stuff anymore. By the way, I didn’t purchase products to enter any of those sweepstakes. Just a lot of 3x5 cards and number 10 envelopes.
I onced surfed the cbssports website back when they had points for those who signed up and all I got were a couple of small-child-sized Tiger Woods commercial t-shirts. They were cancelling their points program and I couldn’t just let my points go to waste, so I fugured I’d at least make them send me these t-shirts I’ll never wear. Maybe I’ll sell them one day. Anyone wanna buy shirts for their little kids that who think think their Tiger Woods?
During the McDonald’s '84 Olympics contest, my family won two Ataris. Which kind of sucked, since we already had one.
But with three Ataris we set up this killer neighborhood-wide Pac-Man tournament that even the parents played in. Was a lot of fun.
I think we gave one away after that but the other two are still in my Dad’s basement.
Also, not a product promotion, but my Dad won a 1976 Plymouth Volare at a church raffle one time. Only problem? It was 1990. I had to BEG not to be forced to drive that car.
A yo-yo. But I’m pretty sure I almost won the million dollars in the McDonalds monopoly contest. I had one half of the million dollar game piece at home, and found the other half in Arizona. I then lost the piece on the flight home. :smack:
About 35 years ago I won a deck of playing cards from LifeSavers, showing rolls of all the different flavors on the backs. It may not sound like much, but I always thought it was a very cool deck, especially now that those '60s packages look so “vintage.” I still have the cards.
I haven’t won anything, but Coke and Pepsi here are always attaching little toy giveaways with their bottles. My computer at work is now decorated with a dozen little manga figures, plus I have two Pepsi hacky-sack bags.
I also received a really nice backpack from Williams Communications for attending a conference they were holding.
I won a Dr Pepper T-shirt in their promotion this spring – they included a “free 12-pack” coupon with it. It’s even a nice T-shirt, big enough, and good quality.
Back in the 80’s Cap’n Crunch cereal had some sort of game/contest where you used clues to find the Captain. Once you knew where he was you mailed in your answer to enter the contest. Twice they gave away 1000 $100 prizes and a third time you selected what prize you wanted from a list (roller blades, kids bicycle, Sony boombox and something else). My wife and I each won $100 through this and I still use the boombox I won the last time they did it.
