I’m talking about saying/words/phrases that started here, not that we just use here, so things like “fnord!” are out.
Here are the ones that I’ve thought of: #1 - “Hi, Opal!” Hard to top this one, it’s everywhere. I’ve seen people with 10 posts use it. Started because OpalCat used to point out that 2 items does not make a list. Posters started greeting her as their third list item. I’ve never used it but to each his own. #2 - “Ask the…” This seems to come and go in phases. At one point there was so many “Ask the…” threads that the mods asked people to cut it out IIRC. Now they’re making a small resurgence. Started with Esprix’s “Ask the Gay Guy!” thead[s] AFAIK. #3 - “Band Name!” Obvious in nature, not sure of the origin. Jarbaby comes to mind but it seems like it outdates her, not sure. Anyone know?
So can anyone think of any more SDMB trends or would like to comment on these? Which is most popular/widely used?
I’m not positive about this, but I believe the “Band Name” thing was actually started by Dave Barry (syndicated Florida humor columnist), who used to use it all the time in his columns.
The Wally signature thing became pretty dang popular. “Ask the…” has become quite the institution. “Hi Opal!”, and its eventual (and powerful) backlash, was pretty friggin’ big. References to “felching” got downright annoying in their heyday. The quickly-derided mini-trend of answering OPs with the “rolleyes” smiley and nothing else.
If I’m not mistaken it comes from some flash cartoon that’s out there somewhere. I don’t know if that came before the pie hijack trend, or if we adopted it as part of the trend after the fact.
It was a common topic when I was in High School, and I graduated in 1995.
Until I came hear I never saw anyone using <hijack> but that could just be because of the boards I went to previously. Why at my favorite (now defunct) boards, our trolls were snerts!
