What's the biggest trend that has been started on the SDMB?

I’m talking about saying/words/phrases that started here, not that we just use here, so things like “fnord!” are out.

Here are the ones that I’ve thought of:
#1 - “Hi, Opal!” Hard to top this one, it’s everywhere. I’ve seen people with 10 posts use it. Started because OpalCat used to point out that 2 items does not make a list. Posters started greeting her as their third list item. I’ve never used it but to each his own.
#2 - “Ask the…” This seems to come and go in phases. At one point there was so many “Ask the…” threads that the mods asked people to cut it out IIRC. Now they’re making a small resurgence. Started with Esprix’s “Ask the Gay Guy!” thead[s] AFAIK.
#3 - “Band Name!” Obvious in nature, not sure of the origin. Jarbaby comes to mind but it seems like it outdates her, not sure. Anyone know?

So can anyone think of any more SDMB trends or would like to comment on these? Which is most popular/widely used?

When I first joined you couldn’t open a thread without some ref. to felching coming up.

The 3 you mention are probably the top 3.

I heard felching at least as far back as 1996 though. A guy at work used to talk about it constantly. Definately not started here.

Anything having to do with hamsters and their association with overeating or otherwise wreaking havoc.

OG SMASH.

Hamsters aren’t peculiar to here – or even the internet. “When I was a girl…” they were assumed to power VWs and other student vehicles.

I’m not positive about this, but I believe the “Band Name” thing was actually started by Dave Barry (syndicated Florida humor columnist), who used to use it all the time in his columns.

twickster47, how YOU doin’?

*Not a genuine flirt, but rather a wicked display of metatextual humour. Or something.

The Wally signature thing became pretty dang popular. “Ask the…” has become quite the institution. “Hi Opal!”, and its eventual (and powerful) backlash, was pretty friggin’ big. References to “felching” got downright annoying in their heyday. The quickly-derided mini-trend of answering OPs with the “rolleyes” smiley and nothing else.

“When come back, bring pie.”

Never seen it before SDMB. Great for nonsensical arguements.

“Goldern double posting!”

“Jerk Moderator!” (my personal fave)

I dont know if these are used anywhere else but I’ve learned new swear words here such as fucktard and asshat.

Gotcha ya!

…Or perhaps I’m the only one who uses this in real life…

Sequential thread titles.

If I’m not mistaken it comes from some flash cartoon that’s out there somewhere. I don’t know if that came before the pie hijack trend, or if we adopted it as part of the trend after the fact.

You are not alone! I think this one all the time, along with “Fucko off!”

One day I’ll say it out loud by mistake and be hooted at in the streets for years to come…

Personally, I’m getting a little tired of constantly hearing:

That Dinsdale is so smart. As well as good looking. I want to bear his children.

Just knock it off, willya?

Allow me to introduce you to Weebl and Bob

And the “Band Name” thingy did come from Dave Barry’s columns.

Way back when we had a trend that lasted a few days. Many threads with one-word titles were opened, i.e. What… When… Where… How… Why… Who…

I tried searching and boardreading for the threads and couldn’t find 'em.

Shucky-Dang.

It was a common topic when I was in High School, and I graduated in 1995.

Until I came hear I never saw anyone using <hijack> but that could just be because of the boards I went to previously. Why at my favorite (now defunct) boards, our trolls were snerts!

Turdburglars.

They’re all the rage this season.
