What's the biggest trend that has been started on the SDMB?

“Lies make Baby Jesus cry” is a line from The Simpsons.

Haj

I heard it in IRC from tiggeril. It had nothing to do, as far as I’m aware (though tigg may say differently), with anything besides the fact that we felt like poking fun at the Pit poster’s constant use of “og” instead of “of.”

So go ask tigg.

Ok, my last post was obviously directed towards the “og” discussion. I could’ve sworn I’d hit “quote,” not just “submit reply.”

By the way, Crunchy Frog, you’re not the only one who remembers the virtual marriages. That’s how I met my fiance, silly as it is.

Paging tiggeril, come in tiggeril.

If tigs says she made it up herself, what will your conclusion be, hajario?

Considering that I still have no idea how to use Usenet and I’ve never been to slashdot, it’d be rather difficult for me to have picked the OG SMASH thing elsewhere.

How unfortunate that I’m not as original as I thought.

:smack: :smack: :smack: Rod and Tod! I knew they had to be guilty of something!

Either she heard about it and forgot and it remained in her subconscious or she came up with it independently. Either way it didn’t start here. That’s all I ever said. It predates the SDMB. In fact, it predates the web. All I know is that when I first saw it here, I remembered having seen it years before. It’s not that big a deal.

I didn’t mean to sound attacking. If I did, I’m sorry.

Just because something similar was around, I don’t think we need to say that racin and tigs didn’t come up with it. And that’s definitely what it was: something similar.

God forbid two similar-but-not-identical things spring up at completely different times under completely different circumstances without one being ripped off of the other.

Who said that that you ripped it off? Get a grip.

Haj

No need to apologize. Yes, it was something similar. I think we can agree that it was invented independently.

Haj

Excuse me but using http://groups.google.com you can find people using cow-orkers as early as 1989

Nah, they were pretty popular back when I chatted in 1996.

While the term “pubbies” is not native to the SDMB, appearing 666 times in the google database, the SDMB does appear to be instrumental in popularizing the slang. Since its first use by Freedom on 11-18-2000, pubbie(s) has been used 92 times in SDMB threads. It’s getting more popular over time, with 79 of the threads clustered in just the past year.
A quick look at the google results shows the word dating back to only ~1998.

A few Google search results (hits):
pubbie 657
pubby 1450 (Used to mean: resembling a pub or bar)
pubbies 666
pubbys 17
pubby + republican 12
pubbie + republican 172 <-- correct spelling of the singular form.
