Planning to move to Alberta to make some quick cash before moving on to Quebec. (Whee!)
Right now, though – money’s tight. Which is why Alberta’s looking so attractive. (Remuneration here is a joke, and cost of living is nuts.)
We don’t have a lot of stuff to move. Originally, we were planning to jettison everything and find furnished digs. Except it doesn’t look like furnished digs are an easily-findable and affordable option in Edmonton, as they are here.
So we need to move the bare necessities. Computers, bed, couch, and table. That sort of thing. Not enough to fill up a truck, most likely.
Anyone know what options there are and what we can expect to pay? What about those little containers that you load up and have hauled off? Are they worth looking into?
Thanks!
I have to caution you to please find housing before heading out to Alberta. There are men working in Ft. McMurray who are making $1K a day, but sleeping in homeless shelters.
Good luck to you! We aren’t all sucky rednecks!
Indeed, I lived in Fort Mac for awhile to, of course, make money. FIND HOUSING BEFORE YOU GO. That’ll save you money, since you won’t be staying in a hotel.
Depending on how far north you go, rental rates get higher and higher until eventually it seems natural to spend something approaching two grand for a two bedroom apartment.
i’d avoid changing your driver’s license and insurance over unless you are staying more than a few months. It’s quite pricey to get your car inspected, I understand.
Sounds to me like the cost and effort to move to Alberta will outweigh any “quick cash” you might make, but then again, I haven’t looked into it. Why not come directly to Québec?
We rented a U-Haul to move from Hamilton Ontario to Montreal, and since we moved on a weekday and not a weekend, we paid 275$ for it, plus gas (which I think came out to about 150-200$). That was for a 17-foot truck (though a booking error resulted in us getting a 26-ft instead!). That price included 660 miles (not km), which was more than enough to get us to Montreal.
We had obtained one quote for a moving company to do the move for us, but it was something like 2300$, so we refused. U-Haul was the only company I was able to find that allowed one-way truck rentals. If your furniture can be broken down, you might want to consider renting a van rather than a truck, or simply renting a u-haul trailer and pulling it behind your vehicle when you move. Those are a lot cheaper (20-30$ a day or something like that).
You can find furnished apartments in Quebec fairly easily (I’m assuming you’re looking at eventually winding up in Montreal, but from my experience, this is true of pretty much anywhere). Cost of living isn’t all that high, from what I understand, but income taxes are!
This thread covered a lot of the details you might need if you move to Quebec, but you might be able to get a sense of your costs for Alberta (or at least get ideas of what to look into) from it: Insurance in Montreal - In My Humble Opinion - Straight Dope Message Board
Good luck!
