What's the correct pronunciation of... [Justine Henin 's last name]

Henin? Justine Henin is a Belgian tennis player of note.)

Everyone t ESPN says ENN-uh. With the uh sounding like the second syllable in cuppa (coffee).

Is this correct?

It’s … closer than the natural Anglicization “Henn-in” (rhymes with “Brennan”) would be. But on-the-money correct for a native French speaker? No.

ENN, as you write, for the first syllable is good enough. It’s that last syllable, though … is should be in the ballpark of the in- in French inviter, incroyable, etc. I realize that might not be a particularly helpful description … and myself, I’ve heard that French in- come out in various ways: close to the the English word “on”, close to the English name “Ann”, and something that sounds like the dismissive interjection “enh?”.

If it were me … as a native English speaker with nowhere near enough French knowledge to even feign fluency … I’d pronounce that last syllable as “eh” – just the vowel in “pet” by itself. Then I’d try to take great care to nasalize that “eh”. I’d still be off, but I’d be getting there

Why do people not put the word they want pronounced in the thread title? That’s what I want to know.

We like to piss you off, I guess.

British commentators tend to say “ENN-ann”, with the final n sound kind of swallowed and nasalised, which is close enough to the French pronunciation, I think.

Actually, wouldn’t “ennay” be a closer English rendering? Not great, but closer than “enn-uh”.

I think I’ve usually heard it as [enĩ], which would sound like “ei-ni” but with a nasalized ‘i’, which is what bordelond has tried to describe. I don’t think this sound is very often used in English. I guess it can also be pronounced [ɛnĩ], or “en-ni” with that same nasal ‘i’.

Is his name French or Flemish?

Henin was born in Liège in the predominently French-speaking Walloon region.

Her mother was French but the nationality of her father (first name José) is unknown to me.

Well, you failed in that. I was simple puzzled.

To keep the mods on their toes.

Cronyism?

:dubious:

???

I know you probably meant that tongue-in-cheek, but posting such a non-descriptive title violates one of the guidelines for this forum, as prominently featured in one of the stickies at the top of the page. Implying that you did it deliberately in order to annoy other posters, even in jest, does not help matters. Hence the :dubious:. Please try to be more considerate of other posters (and avoid making additional work for the moderators) in the future.
