Uncensored Internet TV Now Available?

I’ve gotten this email offer several times, and have ignored it. Supposedly if you subscribe, you can watch TV programs from around the world. Considering what my cable provider offers, anything else would be an improvement.

I suppose it’s a scam, but does anyone know the details?

Since you didn’t provide any details on the service advertised, I can only make guesses, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a scam. You just don’t need to subscribe. Many TV stations from around the world put selected, or all, of their broadcasts on the web to be watched fro free. Two problems:

  • Unless you have a really, really, fast internet connection, and providing that the TV station’s website supports these transfer rates, the screen is small and the quality of the picture poor. More something like Youtube than what you’re accustomed to from conventional TV.

  • Stations don’t necessarily put everything on the web. Especially for copyright reasons (if the station didn’t acquire the license to distribute contents not only on air but also on the web, which costs extra money), movies or sports events will hardly ever be accessible online.

There are other services which don’t broadcast live but rather allow you to record shows and download these recordings as a video file to your computer. The legality of this depends on your jurisdiction.
