I’m gonna back up the 8AM weekdays, 10AM weekends vote. As for how late, I’d say an hour after sundown.
As for my neighbor who was putting the finishing touches on his new deck in time for the Mexico-Iran World Cup game (Game started at 9:00, so this was about 6:30 on a Sunday), well, it was annoying, but we make our share of noise into the wee hours so I can’t complain. Not the way I want to be woken up, though.
Before 10am most of the year is impolite for weekends (before 8am weekdays); anything between 10am-6pm during July and the first half of August is nasty (y’all try doing anything without A/C when it’s 48C in the shadow, I don’t even want to convert to F).
Do it whenever the hell you want. The guy that works third shift is going to kill you, and/or your pets anyways. Ah, screaming children at 7:00 am. If they knew I had gotten off work four hours earlier, and knew what horrors I had in mind for them and their parents, they might choose to scream a bit less. They might also choose to scream at a distance greater than 2 feet from my open window. Maybe.
Some milquetoast, wussy, sadly fertile, dumbshit that I used to live next to, decided that having professionals side his house, would be waaay too expensive.
He’s rather do it himself. In three to four hour chunks. All goddamned Summer long. And then some. 11 months total. It would have cost him maybe $200 more, and would have been done more than half a freakin year beforehand! He did a piss-poor job of it as well.
Has anyone ever complained that “that weeding could have been done at 8 am, why now at 11am?” No. Know your neighbors and their work hours to some degree. Otherwise they may be plotting your death. It’s happened before.
When I was in a (few) band(s), we always had an 11-11 rule. No noise before 11 AM, no noise after 11 PM. We thought that was fair, and recieved no complaints. We thought that that time frame respected most of the people around us. Early riser, or late sleeper.
The earlier/later you perform noisy lawn chores, the more people you will piss off. Be prepared to deal with any results.
My town has a 9-to-9 law, though it’s applied haphazardly. Usually the cops crack down around 10/11 on weekends. My neighbor gave a huge loud outside party recently, and I was treated to a Spanish rendition of “Happy Birthday” at 9:59. Then everybody went inside and was quiet.
I’m surprised at all the votes for 10 on weekends.
Of course, I’m usually back from playing 9 holes well before then!
Seriously, I would have said 9 on weekends, 8 on weekdays.
And I guess there might be a snowblower exception, tho I am a shovel guy myself.
And if I were king, outlawing leaf blowers might well be my first act.
Wow, the majority of the posts are 10 am on the weekends, y’all would hate to live around me. We have a city-wide noise ordinance of no gas operated power tools before 7am during the week, and 8am on the weekends. I play my golf in the afternoon, so I’m firing up the mower/chainsaw, etc., at 8:01 in order to get done quickly, especially in the summer.
Same here. Lately we’ve had many days of temps over 100 degrees F, which means I want to get that lawn mowing done as early as possible, while it’s still cool. I start at 9 and get done (hopefully) well before 11. The difference between 9 and 10, temperature-wise, is pretty substantial.
Thanks, everybody! Sounds like my 10 a.m. idea isn’t weird and I didn’t make it up, though it also sounds like it isn’t quite as universal as I thought. I’ll pass along the info to the Spouse.
I just wait until I hear someone else start their lawnmower.
Otherwise, I’m generally in that nine to nine group.
Wish a former landlord understood the idea of folks liking to sleep on weekends - one day we were jarred awake by heavy footsteps and various thunks and ripping noises at 6:30 AM on Saturday when his roofing crew arrived.
During the week I will start as early as 9. If you’re working, you’re up and if you’re retired, you’re up as are all oldsters.
On the weekend I won’t start before 10, unless I know that an approaching storm won’t allow me to finish it unless I start earlier. At the other end, I will go up to dark. Sometimes if it’s really hot (in Michigan anything above 80), then I wait until I have just enough light to finish the job.
Unfortunately, snowblowing is different. You really can’t just let it go until tomorrow. If you’ve got to be at work at 4am, and it snowed all night, then snowblowing at 3am it is. If he’s just doing it because he’s up, then irked would be putting it mildly.
Found this thread as I was trying to figure out if I have legal recourse against my neighbors constant 8am power tool usage. I don’t. Apparently, by law anyone can run a jackhammer here all day from 7am on, if they want to.
Personally as I sit here over an hour later still listening to the table saw that woke me up at 8am, I’m pretty ticked off. This is a s@!**y way to start a day. 10am would’ve been fine, but 8am is just a big ‘screw you’ attitude. They can forget about any reciprocal courtesy from me.
