What's the funniest single panel cartoon you've ever seen?

Yep.

But I’ll post one anyhow: The facial expressions in this slay me.

There was a Mother Goose and Grimm panel that always got me. At the time Old Milwaukee had the tag line “It doesn’t get any better than this.” The panel had Grimm saying the line as he is looking up from drinking out of the toilet.

But that is second to every single Far Side.

CAR!

There’s another one, which I couldn’t find: A husband and wife are sitting in the living room as an elderly woman is walking by. A trail of toilet paper is coming out from under her dress, leading back off-panel. The husband says “She’s your mother. YOU tell her.”

Larson was just amazing. Here’s my favorite:

We’ll eat like kings.

If you forced me to pick one, it would probably be Hit the bird, Ruth. Second place would be Llamas at home.

I am sort of ashamed of how long I had to think about the “enormous favor” cartoon before I got it.

Mine is a Far Side cartoon, and I can’t find a link other than Pinterest, but the boogie man is at the door. Two children are looking out the window at him in terror, and the mother (wearing the usual cat’s eye glasses) is saying “Why yes. We do have two children here who won’t eat their vegetables.”

Regards,
Shodan

Also a Far Side.

Fuel… check. Lights… check. Oil pressure…

You may already be a wiener!

I may be showing my age here. This Charles Barsotti cartoon was published in the National Lampoon many, many years ago, and at the time, “you may already be a winner” was a frequent come-on used in junk mail.

Have you found Jesus?

My favorite was a Guindon cartoon - a yuppie looking man is standing next to a car with flat tire. There are dollar bills on the ground, and more in his hand. The caption is “A liberal throwing money at a problem”. Can’t find much of his stuff online, but here is another pretty good one, starring Santa.

Pretty much any square Mauldin drew.

Did you know that most of his famous ones from “Up Front” were redrawn from the originals? That one with the jeep has a precursor with a very different style.

My mother had that one hanging up for years, and so it’s family tradition to write it that way. Even for dog fud.

Much as I like Gary Larson, B. Kliban was the real trailblazer in that sort of humor.* This was a great one.

*N.B. His cat cartoons are nowhere near his best.

Duty Calls, which truly explains why I get no sleep.

This Sidney Harris classic.

Going old school, this one by Charles Addams.

Can’t remember the artist, but Snow White is walking to the front door of the cottage reading a newspaper with the headline, “Python Escapes From Zoo”, while out of the back window crawls a giant snake with seven lumps inside.

Or the Far Side “crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside” polar bear cartoon…

I’ve always loved this Far Side “tofudebeest” one:

Single Session therapy

James Thurber was writing realist humor and drawing absurdist cartoons long ago:
