I’ve recently discovered the first three studio albums by Rainbow. There are a bunch of songs on all three records I liked immediately.
The Gabriel-esque Somebody That I Used To Know
Jonathan Coulton’s Down Today. Love it to death. His latest album is fantastic.
I’m going to enjoy going through this thread and listening to everyone’s finds! Wish I didn’t have to leave for work in ten minutes.
I was watching the BBC comedy show “Him & Her” the other week. Towards the end of the episode there was a lovely little tune, which I just HAD to have a copy of. I stayed up until 2am (about a couple of hours after I had seen the show) tracking it down, eventually being dismayed to hear that it was written especially for the show by the show’s writer and he considered it a throwaway piss-take. I still don’t know if he has released an MP3, but I found a video on the BBC site with what appears to be most of the song and I recorded the audio from that.

HA! That one’s probably not the last one I heard, but it’s the first one I thought of, instantly.
And the video really hit me. Rather bacchae-like.
A few months ago I heard a song called I Don’t Mind by a band called Sunday Valley on Morehead State University’s radio station. I liked it so much I immediately tracked them down and bought the album. Here’s a link to their web site page that contains a tune widget; you have to select I Don’t Mind from the list.
Ceelo Green’sNo One’s Gonna Love You. I first heard it on Cracked, of all places.
I’ll second Sail by Awolnation. Burn it Down. Actually, I got all of Monolithic Symphony off of iTunes, instantly really liked about 7 songs off it, and never got into any the rest. All of their songs seem to be of the ‘instantly love or hate’ variety.
Breathe Out, Breathe In by the Zombies!
I went to see their 50th anniversary tour a few weeks ago and they opened with it. I loved it and assumed it was an obscure old song of theirs I hadn’t heard before, but after it Blunstone announced that it was a new song…
“Somewhere Only We Know” on Glee made me seek out the original artist, which turned out to be Keane, new to me. Glee has introduced me to quite a bit of music I wouldn’t otherwise know.
Rockin’ in the Free World. Neil Young. 1989.
Evidently it was “Shake it Out”.
Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel…” LOVE THAT SONG! See if you can spot the famous actor in the video, too:
Friday by Rebecca Black
Pumped Up Kicks, of course. That song is catchy as hell.
Others:
Passion Seekers - Little Tybee
Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes
Victory - Trampled By Turtles
That’s the one. One of the few times I immediately Googled a song as soon as I got off the road.
“The Calamity Song” by the Decemberists and “Conversation 16” by the National.
Fountains of Wayne – A Dip In The Ocean
