Meow why would you say something like that?
I agree:
Raising Arizona sucked. God I hate this moive.
Actually, I agree with most of this thread except for The Jerk and Leonard Part 6. I actually have fond memories of these. I used to own a VHS of LP6 and my sister and I watched it at least 10 times. I also liked Basketball.
My own addition would probably be There’s Something about Mary. My friends from high school raved endlessly about this movie. I managed about 25 minutes before I had to leave the room in complete disgust.
I didn’t like Christian Slater’s character because it was just too much but, otherwise, I enjoyed Very Bad Things, especially Jeremy Piven and Daniel Stern’s characters’ interactions.
I have to say American Pie but I have my reasons. I didn’t see it at the movies and my kids didn’t happen to watch it while I was around so I didn’t see it until I chose it as a free rental with something else. So I had no doubt seen some of the funny bits in shorts and ads. However when I started watching the movie it was almost as though I had written the script, I could see where every scene was headed and knew what gag was coming up. I became bored and started reading while continuing to watch. Shortly before the end I realised that I had not smiled, chuckled or laughed once. I figured that was unique among comedies and from there it never had a chance I guess. I made it through without so much as a grin.
How about Batman and Robin, the worst abuse of a comic franchise since Superman IV?
My mother wishes to nominate “any movie with Pauly Shore”.
Your mother has a point.
Cheaper by the Dozen and Hitch are two recent examples of the genre.
That was actually the only scene that managed to get a few laughs out of me.
I had forgotten about Master of Disguise (must have blocked it out of my mind). That movie was horrible.
Not only am I going to agree with this, but I will extend it to include anything with Ben Stiller in it. He makes me cringe almost as much as Larry David. Are they related or something?
I agree that this is a horrible idea for a film, but does it really count here? Was it intended as a comedy, or was Lewis trying to do straight drama? And not only was the film never released, there was never even a final edit; there’s only raw footage never seen by anyone but Lewis and a few of his friends and associates.
I agree that *Candadian Bacon * set new standards of failure for comedy.
I’ve never seen It’s Pat, but a few people whom I know have and they all agree that it was a total unique cinematic disaster. But almost any film based on a Saturday Night Live sketch is bad news.
*Joe Dirt * never made me crack a smile or gave me a giggle. It’s not because of the crude ethnic/class humor. I come from that sort of background myself, and I don’t think I’m hypersensitive about it. But a couple of Jeff Foxworthy “you might be a redneck if” jokes have far more wit and insight than this entire wretched film.
I would like to nominate all the Jim Varney “Ernest” movies. I tried to watch a few but had to stop.
And the only movie I ever asked for a refund (and they gave it) was “Joe vs. the Volcano”.
Head
Schindler’s List, not so much with the funny.
What was that Leslie Nielson spoof of the exorcist? Repossesed? That was heavily lame. And Mel Brook’s Men In Tights was a sad, sad shadow of his former greatness.
racer72, Joe vs. the Volcano is a movie I have watched over and over again. I quote it so much my friends who haven’t seen it have parts of it memorized.
thwartme
Well they’re not all franchises, but I’d have to include Superman III, Punisher, Hulk, Steel, Spawn, and Catwoman with them too, for sheer suckitude.
I take it none of you have seen Waiting.
Don’t bother.
I’m amazed that I’ll be the first to nominate Cableguy. That was pretty astonishingly unfunny.
I’m not sure it was meant to be funny. I think Jim Carrey’s character was supposed to be disturbing rather than amusing. They wanted to sell it as a Jim Carrey movie, though, so they let him schtick it up a bit. Picture the same movie with Michael Madsen or Christopher Walken in the Carrey role.
I know none of you saw Marci X.
What was that movie with Joey and the baseball playing monkey?
M. Hulot’s Holiday. Proof positive that sight gags are not the universal language.
