This is how we do it. Our max so far is around 100 days, and that included swinging by the house for a few days mid-trip to wash and restock. So it really was about 65 days, interrupted by a few days at the house, then 35 days. Recently we’ve been limiting it to 4-5 weeks. We normally spend around 75 days a year traveling. We averaged around 35 days/year when working and the kids were at home.
Agreed. That’s why I favor RV travel over any other method (lower 48 anyways). My bed, my stuff, my food in the fridge, my medicine cabinet, I’m basically at home the whole time.
We’ve learned this as well. In 2024, we met up with my wife’s family in Glacier NP. I noticed they seemed to be enduring too much “togetherness” after 10 days (5 people sharing an AirBnB and a rental car). We stayed separately in the campground, and just met them for hikes and meals every other day.
I really like where I live; both my residence and the surrounding area. But I designed my life so I have no obligations there. So “vacation” is every day wherever I am.
At this moment I’m on the road 11 days, this is my third city and I could easily be gone another 2 months if I wanted. It happens I’m heading back next week, but that’s entirely to facilitate GF’s more constrained life.
When I become infirm enough that walking is difficult, I’ll be stuck near home. Until then, any day spent at home while there’s still somewhere on Earth I haven’t been yet feels like a wasted day.
IMO life’s “routines” are what you do to avoid actually living that day; choosing instead to just exist because that’s easier.
