What's the longest walk you've ever taken?

What’s the longest walk/hike you have ever taken, in terms of distance and/or duration? Did you stop and rest at any point?

I ask because today I beat my personal record for longest walk when I walked about 35.5 miles non-stop in just under ten hours. It was fun, but my legs are pretty sore and so is my back, from being in that same walking position for so long.

For those of you who know the area (Santa Barbara, CA), I walked from Hope Ranch to Goleta to Montecito and back to Hope Ranch.

Well… longest hike I took was 12Km in one day (up a mountain through a pass and halfway down the other side). Unless I am off in my calculations that is about 7.2m. I quite possibly have walked more (done several day hikes since and also just walking around the city) but I never found out how much I’d hiked.

I’ve been working too late to go to the gym recently, so for exercise I decided to start walking home from work. Looking at the map, my route from Tsukiji to Sangenjaya is about 12km, which I do in about 2 hours. I was completely wiped out the first time I did it, but now it’s gotten a lot easier. I’ve even taken to jogging some of the less crowded legs. I may start doing longer ones at some point, but until the weather gets cooler, there’s no way I’m doing it in the daytime.

I did the Walk for Hunger in Boston. The course was 20 miles long but we walked to the starting line which added 5 miles more. I finished 25 miles in 5 hours 15 minutes. I was very sore the next day but overall it was a good experience.

I once accidentally walked 20 miles. I turn a wrong turn. Boy did I feel disgusted when I saw that “Tucson City Limits” sign.

And to make it all worse it was when I was walking back from the airport and I had a huge dufflebag full of clothes to carry back. I was a little sore for a few days.

I walked home one night when my car broke down after the clubs closed. I had to be at work in the morning at 7am. It was 20 miles to the house. (Forget about catching a ride at 3 in the morning) I got home in time to take a shower, change, and grab a ride to work. Damn, I was tired that day!

I’m a wuss, my longest walk was about 5 and a half miles.

I have recurring dreams where I have to walk or run insane distances, though. Recently I dreamed I ran from Dallas to San Antonio.

10 hours my first time in Paris. Includes walking up the Eiffel Tower, as far as allowed, up the Arc de Triomphe, up the hill to the Basilique du Sacre Coeur, through the Latin Quarter, … everywhere. I couldn’t get enough.

My longest walk was a six-day hike in the Hogsback Mountains in the Eastern Cape, South Africa - 112km (70mi), which translates to about 12 miles a day…

Somebody gave me a lift to a party once, it started out OK but turned into an unpleasant situation (drugs of all kinds started to be passed around and my refusal to partake began to look unreasonable to everyone); I excused myself thinking I could get the train home but when I got to the station the last train had gone for the night. I walked home. It was about 25 miles.

Probably about 10 miles on the beach in Jamaica.

My story is kinda lame compared to the rest of ya, but to me–it’s a badge of pride!

After arriving at Salt Lake International, home at last after visiting family–I had trouble getting in touch with my ride home. I was impatient. And even though I hadn’t slept in over 20 hours, rather than wait and keep calling, I started walking. I dunno why. It’s at least 45 miles to my apartment from the airport, and that’s following the freeway.

But I had packed light, so I put on my long black coat–put my backback around my shoulders–and walked about 8 and a half miles in 90 degree heat from the airport to the Gateway plaza in Salt Lake proper.

After that–the heat got to me. So I decided to wait at the plaza’s food court until I could get in touch with my ride home.

Two years in a row, I did the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon in Baltimore - back when it was a 25-mile walk.

And once, just for the heck of it, I walked from my parents’ new house to their old house - 18 miles. I got caught in a rain shower and my pants started foaming - apparently I was using too much laundry detergent and it wasn’t completely rinsed out.

Did I ever tell you about when I went down to Penn Plaza to meet Persephone for coffee…?

Hey, I’m part of a sig! Nice one sublight.

I walked Tiger Leaping Gorge in China - not long in distance, but very long in fear, difficulty and experience. Also the Annapurna trail in Nepal. But the longest walk in one day was about 17 miles in the Peak District in England.

Back when I did my military service I walked (marched) about 50 kms (31 miles). This was with full combat gear and pack and it was both on roads and through terrain. I don´t remember how long it took us.

The weather was lousy though (November with rain and even a little snow) which made the boots wet which was very hard on the feet. I had some really disgusting blisters after that.

The Ferry Docks to Islingtom subway station in Toronto, after spending my last subway fare on the night before payday.

I walked over 26 miles in the summer of 1991, just to see if I could cover a marathon length without fainting. I left before sunrise and got back in the early afternoon, so it took maybe 10 hours, including 3 or 4 long rests. It was really too warm a day for it, and I got a bit overheated, possibly with a minor case of sunstroke. It took a few days to recover. In cooler weather I have walked 20 miles or more several times without great discomfort. Some day, I hope to try for 50 km (about 31 miles), but I’ve been saying that for 11 years.

About fifteen miles, and it took me over five hours. I was at work, but didn’t have my car, and was going to ask a co-worker for a ride back. Alas, I got stuck for half an hour over my scheduled leave time. By that point, everyone else had gone home. My shoes weren’t optimal for the lengthy exercise, and by the last mile I was repeating to myself, “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger…What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger…” If I had a chance to do it over again, I’d just find an empty room in the building and spend the night at work.

50 miles, with a school group when I was sixteen. We started at 4 in the morning, finished around 10 at night, and took a break every hour. Actually, it was probably closer to 55 miles, cos we walked back to our camp from the finish point (a few wimps took the bus back) and got lost along the way. My toes were bleeding by the end of it, and I ached for several days afterwards. It was one of those things… glad I’ve done it once, not so keen on doing it again.
