I had a maddening experience today- I was at a stop sign trying to cross an intersection with a rather busy 2 lane road. And the traffic kept coming . . and kept coming . . and kept coming. Just when it was clear one way, cars kept coming the OTHER way.
After what seemed like an eternity, actually 3 minutes, I was FINALLY able to cross! Then a thought popped into my mind that seems to come around again and again . . what is the longest a human being has ever been stuck in a situation like this? 5 minutes? An hour? DAYS? I can’t imagine anyone has been stuck for more than 5-6 minutes?
Let me know what your worst is . . just a few rules:
-traffic jams, construction, police stops etc don’t count. Has to be a combination of bad luck and freely moving cars
-red lights don’t count. Just stop signs.
-Trying to cross while leaving a parking lot under the same circumstances can count withing reason.
I think you get my drift . . .
Of course, any funny stories or creative solutions for “getting across the road or merging into traffic” would be appreciated. Tales of road rage or fisticuffs- even better!
I got to the stop sign sometime last week, and I’m still here. Luckily I have my laptop with a wireless internet connection so I can continue to post! Of course, I am starting to get hungry.
Before the city built a light there, traffic trying to turn onto MacArthur from Highland (Highland dead-ends at MacArthur) was SOL. If you were making a right, you could probably pull a “Punch it, Margaret!” tire-squealing turn in around three minutes, if you were lucky .
Making a left? Fuhgeddaboudit. I remember sitting in the passenger seat at age 8 when Mammarasta was driving one Saturday afternoon, and we waited every bit of 35 minutes .
On (one) of my routes to school there’s a road that T-intersects to form a 3-way stop. I have to make a left turn (from the single branch onto the two-direction branch).
While looking left from the waiting road, all that can be seen is a huge hedge. The view of the road is blocked except for cars that are <15’ away. On the right you can see a good 150’ down, but the cars don’t stop coming.
Turning right isn’t too bad, but pointless because it leads me back home. Turning left is hard as heck, yet necessary.
getting on the Kam highway between Mililani and Wahiawa there’s this annoying stop sign, which really should be a light I mean people have died there. Anyway trying to pull onto the highway you are last on the totem poll as of course people going straight have 1st right of way, then the people turning off of Kam hwy then lastly pulling on. And it’s a pretty busy road. Luckily I’m extremely gutsy with a really good eye and am not afraid to punch it so I’ve probably never been there for more then a minute when I’m alone. With passengers that might double.
Bummer. I suppose that rules out the time I got stuck on a stop sign. Sliding backwards. With the trunk of my car in the water. (FTR, about 90 minutes before it was un-stuck.)
