What's the meaning behind your SDMB user name?

Booze and Water :: hick ::

Just so happens I was listening to an old Merle Haggard song when I was creating my name.

I wrote a variant of the Evil Overlord rules for movie and TV villains who have a damsel in distress in their power, which I called the Evil Captor Rules. Then I thought, “Evil Captor” – good screen name. And so it is.

You can find the Evil Captor rules on the Gorco Industries portion of my homepage (no direct link as there’s some nekkidity involves, though it’s mild nekkidity. My main site’s main page is definitely NOT work safe as well.) Mostly they deal with not tying women up so they can escape in seconds, not leaning in close to them when you’ve got them tried jup so they can spit in your face, that sort of thing. It seems like pretty obvious stuff, but you’d be surprised how many TV and movie villains make these mistakes over and over and over again. Much like any other group of evil overlords, I guess.

Well **hill o beans ** If I tell you I will have to kill you. :stuck_out_tongue:

I chose a nonsense word from the title of an old hippie song that hardly anyone ever heard of.

Fits me perfectly on all counts.

<------- Self-explanatory.

I was sitting there, minding my own business, wondering what my SDMB username should be. I’d been through all sorts of options in my mind; various clever wordplays, puns on all sorts of culturally related phenomena, riotously inventive monikers guaranteed to send everyone into fits of laughter. And then, suddenly, from out my mind’s muddled muck, sprang this glorious name: Fnoonf.

It’s weird, it’s unassuming, it has a quirky feel to it when you roll it across your tongue, and best of all, it’s a palindrome. And I tried running a Google search on it, and it hasn’t been used before, ever, by anyone. But best of all, it’s a friggin’ palindrome.

Did I mention it’s a palindrome?

Wouldn’t fnoonf have had a better visual effect than Fnoonf though? Do you lose sleep at night wishing you would have made that first “F” an 'f"? My gawd in heaven, us anal-retentive-obsessive-compulsive types out here are twisting our hair out having to put up with that FRIGGIN F.

fnoonf seems to me like sound of someone falling into a beanbag chair.

Anyway, I’ve posted the origins of my name on some of the earlier threads, but no harm in hashing it out one more time. My name in fact has nothing to do with speed or space travel. I first came up with it when I signed up to the Motley Fool boards, and at the time I was working with the Submarine Systems division of NEC, managing some projects for new undersea fiber optic cables. Undersea -> sub, fiber optics -> light. Presto!

I think about changing it every now and then, particularly after reading Illuminatus! or Schroedinger’s Cat. Markov Cheney, August Personage, Random Factor and occasionally Robert Putney Drake strike me as good choices, but I think I’ll stick with who I am.

Thanks, Rayn! And you get points from me for having a handle that’s an anagrammatized version of the name my girlfriend and I want to adopt after getting married.

Yarn?

manx is a cartoon cat that I used to draw. She has big bushy tail and was not at all funny.

I like the sound of the word, and the fact that it’s fun to draw.

Napier was the mathematician who invented the slide rule. Well, no, he actually didn’t - he invented logarithms, and he also invented a calculating tool called “Napier’s Bones” which had numbers on them (albeit not scaled along the length especially) and which facilitated math, sort of like a partial multiplication table. But he never put his logarithms on his Bones. He came so close to making a slide rule proper that he almost might as well have.

What I like most about Napier is that in his day he was known as a pamphleteer who worked to promote the viewpoint that the Pope was actually the Antichrist.

Hi, my name is SkyBum and I’m a skydiveaholic…

Hi,

This is my 1st post on this forum. The BBQ pit is full of atheists and democrats - too much for me to bear.

I was just a sittin’ here one day, and decided I wanted to be able to participate. I like peace, and I am female. Pretty simple.

However, please, please, NEVER MISTAKE ME FOR A DEMOCRAT!!!

Peace Lady

Sorry Peace Lady, but if you like peace, what the heck are you doing siding with the Repubs? They’re the pro-war party if ever there was one. I think you ARE a Democrat and just haven’t realized it yet.

I would rather be pro-war than pro-abortion and pro-walfare. Do you know how many babies are mudered each year in the US, and, IT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL. Many, many more than are people killed in wars.

About the pro-war thing, that is just not how I see it. Simple difference of opinion. I think Bush had every right to launch the war. People are now saying “well, where ARE those weapons of mass destruction”? To me, just the threat was enough. What if there really were, or are, there? Would have caused many more deaths and heart-break than the war.

Bush was trying to avoid that. And just because weapons of mass production have not been found, doesn’t mean that there were not any.

I believe that war is SOMETIMES justified to protect the greater good. Please, believe me when I say that I hate war and the subsequent deaths of ANYONE as a result, but feel that we had no choice.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION - NO NEED TO FLAME ME.

Peace Lady

Whoah whoah whoah now. Take this to Great Debates. Don’t pollute our wonderful thread with your political agendas.

With all due respect, Peace Lady, it might be better to save your political views for another thread so this one doesn’t turn into a flamefest.

Mine is from Hamlet, the bit where his father’s ghost comes back:

Always did think that was a great way to begin a ghost story, and my first post was in a Shakespeare-related thread, so it seemed to fit.

I completely agree that I should not have posted my political and religious beliefs on this forum.

I sincerely apologize, and will keep with the forum title in the future.

Peace Lady
