Doyle Hargraves from Slingblade.
One of my hero-models, perhaps the one I feel the strongest kinship with, and in whose realm I have dabbled professionally with the aim of becoming a professional dabbler therein, occasionally (and fairly accurately) described himself thus in letters and on calling cards.
Sir Richard Francis Burton
It has nothing to do with Robert Howard, Gor, Thundarr or any other present-day association of the latter word.
For about 20 years, I was an unlikely accident waiting to happen. This was a particular nickname given to me by a close friend. Along with Accident Prone Man, Booboo Bear, and many others.
Excellent!
Alpine spelled backwards. Alpine was the name of my dog, and I live in the mountains.
Alpine as a user name was already taken. So I just spelled it backwards.
And it’s kinda odd, Alpine (the member here) and I have the same somewhat obscure jobs in government and both live up at altitude in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
Species name for American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos).
Okay, I originally joined this message board in order to try to better learn how to debate and persuade. So I thought it was kinda archetypal if my name was gateway because it is sort of like, “if you listen to my opinion and I persuade you, you are stepping through the gate and coming out the other side.” That was pretty much the idea. I thought it sounded cool and mysterious too.
Very interesting. I’m a big fan of RFB, and never knew this. But I’ve re-read his books many times, and have a complete set of his Arabian Nights.
Mine is obvious, just a nickname I picked up as a kid. Badger, funny thing was I only recently found out where the name came from when I was visiting with some old grammar school friends. I always thought they called me badger because I was scrappy. One of the kids told me that his dad actually stuck that name on me after a camping trip when he saw me trying to dig animals out of their holes with my bare hands.
One of my “Four Fond Interests” that do not get enough of my time these days, between a need to do some income-producing work in any given week and devoting as much time as possible to a less Fond but more significant project. The Burton project is probably beyond my remaining lifespan’s ability to complete but I refuse to box it up yet.
Tim Toldrum’s dead.
Whenever my brother greets me, he tries to imitate Homer’s friend Barney(?) from The Simpsons and says “Hey Homie!”
When I registered, I was in the middle of reading Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael mystery novels.
(Brother Cadfael is a 12th century monk, who suffers from Jessica Fletcher’s disease: people seem to die mysteriously whenever he’s around.)
Wanted something unique to this message board that I could easily remember. I could really not care less if anyone else remembers my username.
My username means I do, in fact, gno it all.
Including the fact that there’s an earlier thread on the same topic, for more insights.
Ambivalent invalid (with a heavy dose of sarcasm).
Another literary type here. Seldom Seen Smith is a character from the Edward Abbey novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang, always a favorite of mine.
Crap. You’re not ambidextrous?
It’s from the novel of the same name by Sybly Whyte.
A character from the Incal graphic novel series. In more general terms it represents the duality of the Fool, the Jungian thing…
