The cynical romantic and optimistic pessimist. (Also, it’s a very indirect reference to a magical system in a novel.)
I’d give my left arm to be ambidextrous!!
My name is from an obscure character in Jack Vance’s “The Palace of Love” novel. Actually, not even a character, but a personification embedded in a poem written by one of the novel’s characters.
I just assumed you were Rig’s brother.
There have been multitudes of “explain your username” threads, and I think I’ve responded to most of them. But hey, I like to talk about myself!
“Fach” is German for “compartment, cubbyhole, pigeonhole, subject, etc.” In German opera houses, the Fach system is used to categorize voices by range and weight so that singers can be matched up easily to roles. “Verwirrt” is confused. I spent most of my early singing life wavering between baritone and tenor, so it seemed appropriate.
For the last ten years, I have actually been pretty solidly a baritone. Prophetically, however, the name became relevant again as my new teacher has actually successfully turned me into an actual tenor, although the transition is ongoing and will take a while longer.
Once the transition is full and complete, I suspect I will finally retire the name.
As a legitimist royalist and stuartist, a regard for John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee, the great jacobite hero.
I keep to the name anywhere registered on the Web.
Technically, in 17th century Scots, it’s pronounced Clavers [clayv-vers]; but I adhere to the regular klaa-ver-house sounding.
The parts of the Internet where I hung out when I joined this board were full of spoiler whores (people who wanted to know all about their favorite T.V. show before it aired). I, on the other hand, want nothing to do with spoilers, hence Spoiler Virgin.
I am a dude. I like to run.
I’m an academic. It is my main professional identity- being a professor/researcher. I never wanted to leave college and I basically never have.
I couldn’t think of anything other than I feel like a stranger in a strange land. Then I added a number significant to me.
Bob Ducca is a character played by Seth Morris that originated on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast, which I’m a big fan of (or used to be anyway, don’t listen much anymore.) He’s also appeared in character on the television, which you can see here.
When I was young and stupider, I had a real thing for Lynn Truss’ brand of snarky prescriptivism. I got over it, but it was too late for the name. Someday, I’ll probably change it if I can ever think of what a better name would be.
It’s also French for hummingbird.
My username is just my name and my last initial, as some may have guessed. Though I sometimes wonder if I should change it to something that makes it less easy to track me down.
The character played by the late, great Pete Postlethwaite in The Usual Suspects. I originally put in just ‘Kobayashi’, but that was taken. Liked the way he had such presence without so much as lifting a finger. As it was in the film he actually introduces himself as ‘Mr. Kobayashi’ so it worked out in the end, and I joined the many Dopers with ‘Mr.’ in their name. If the original was an active poster I’d probably have changed my name to avoid confusion.
I’m mercurial.
It’s my name (Peter K. Beitz).
How original, huh?
It originally came from Taino, the language of the indigenous people of most of the West Indies. In German it’s Kolibri.
My initials are JRS. I enjoy the music of Old School Hip-Hop Artist KRS-One, So I combined the two to make Jrsone. It’s clever, you see.
I grew up in rural Illinois and have a habit of watching storm clouds for signs of rotation. It’s also my go-to name for Bards in RPGs.
My father built me wings of wax, and I flew too close to the sun - metaphorically speaking.
It’s my last name.
