What's the most annoying thing someone can do on a message board?

My biggest pet peeve is when people quote an entire page long post in thier reply as though we didn’t just read it. God I hate that. Just take the little piece that you want to comment on and quote that. Or if you are commenting on the whole post then just say the posters name and we will probably figure out what post you are talking about.

A close second is leet speak or people abbreviating words that are not normally abbreviated. I saw someone abbreviate the word “back” once with “bk”.

Sheesh.

On this message boared, or in general?

In general, I would say that the most annoying thing you can do is spam with dozens of new threads eventually killing the board.

I agree 100%.

Threaten to leave.

And then stay.

Threatening suicide on a public message board is one of my biggest pet peeves. It’s such an obvious, underhanded ploy for sympathy, and I’m always tempted to say, “If you really want to kill yourself, just DO IT already!!!” (Actually, I really did say that once, on another board. I’m not allowed back there anymore.)

Mac vs PC wars.

I dont know why, but I always get a twinge of annoyance when someone does the whole, “LOL,” thing, I dont know why, it just pisses me off.

i think that the most annoying thingz that peepal do on teh

Is that in English?

I have a similar reaction to the use of “u” in place of “you.”

[ul][li]Unnecessary abbreviations. Being succinct does not mean you have to write like it’s an SMS text message.[/li][li]Really bad spelling (and to a lesser extent, grammar). Everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes you forget to preview. Please try to make an effort, though: the amount of attention I pay to your post is related to how easily understood it is.[/li][li]Post count parties, or any other celebration of quantity over quality. That’s just a pet hate. I can’t really justify it beyond that.[/li]Overuse of non-text elements. That’s not such a big deal here, even if I hate smiley faces, but on some other boards I’ve seen massive animated signatures, embedded images and so on with bugger all in the way of restrictions.[/ul]

If you want to see the most insane sized sigs go check out the forums over at gamespot. Those kids have huge pictures of computers, video game characters, and animated logos for thier game clans. And most have several of each!

One thing that has always bugged me at other boards is the seemingly incessant need to bump threads lest they approach the middle of the page. It’s ridiculous.

And another thing! Why can’t every board have the same (high) level of moderation that we have? It’s insane just how bad trolls and spammers can run loose on some of these boards.

Oh well. Guess that’s why I love the SDMB.

Oh god, yes. I hate that.

Over-use of smilies. Not a problem on this board, but on other boards I see people using about two smilies per line. For some reason I find the Japanese smilies really annoying, like these: (^^) (^o^) (^^;)

Personal insults, and people who have to respond to EVERY thread. Respond when you have something to add, not someting to say.

Multicolored posts are annoying. I don’t mean one word done in red, to maybe indicate an emphasis, but the ones where every other letter is a different color.

All caps. A thread could divulge the secret of a long and healthy life full of happiness and wealth but if it is in all caps, I will not read it.

People who don’t use correct spelling or grammar, and then get all huffy when other people call them on it. Y’know, that whole thing of “hey, dude, this is a message board, not a thesis. Chill out! Who cares if I didn’t spell things right?”

I @#!# care. I don’t want your drivel messing up MY message board.

I really hate when people feel the need to correct other’s misspellings, especially when they try to make that a big part of an argument.
“Um, I believe the word is ‘cart,’ not ‘crat’. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I understand that it’s simple to go back and check and correct spelling mistakes, but some of us type fast, or are just horrible when it comes to spelling. If people can understand that “wrod” is supposed to be “word,” don’t make an entire post just to point out one stupid mistake.

Also, whenever someone starts up a thread that has the same topic of another one from a few weeks ago or so, I hate when people simply post “We already talked about that here…” It’s one thing to say “You can get opinions of other dopers’ opinions in this similar thread…” but the majority of the time, it seems that people post similar threads because they’re pissed about something. You can almost always read the word “Jackass” after each post. And hey, sometimes people miss a thread or go away for a while and don’t see something, so by the time they come up with an idea, it’s long gone on the thread, and other people may have new input.
