What's the most property damage you've caused?

You need to tell us this story, or at least link to a post where you do.

I don’t know if he’ll show up in this thread, but I would bet that David Simmons would have us all beat.

As I don’t know the statute of limitations on the most spectacular, I’d rather not say.

Totaled an old Nova and a new Honda back in the 80’s (ran a stop sign). Probably $10k.
Forgetting to turn of the water to our swamp cooler did over $10k damage to our house one year.

One time in a hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, on the lake Geneva shoreline, I was playing with this flare gun, when…

Never mind.

I backed an SUV out of our garage one day without remembering that the tailgate was open. It caught on the garage door and tore two panels off, as well as destroying most of the tracks the door rode on. It also damaged the tailgate of the vehicle. I never bothered getting the car fixed (the tailgate still operated normally except the wiper) but the door cost about $1000 to replace.

The very first time my dad took me out to practice driving, I ran the family car into one of those concrete banks on the side of an overpass bridge. It messed up the front end and knocked out the alignment.

I also once put my hand through my bedroom window. Our house was really old and the windows stuck in the hot weather, so I banged on the glass with the heel of my hand to try and unstick the wood.

My dad wasn’t pleased in both cases.

Hit a golf ball through someone’s window and into a supposedly expensive antique crystal bowl breaking it. I was told not to worry about it by my golfing partners, the home owner disagreed 5 minutes later. After 10 minutes of haggling, I agreed to give him $1500 for the damage. I left with his name and address, he left with a phony name and phone number.

In our senior year in high school, an acquaintance of mine developed the habit of punching holes through whiteboards, throwing doors open so hard the handles knocked holes in the adjacent walls, and punching the shit out of trees (which gave him a few superficial injuries) when he finally figured out that I was bumping uglies with his girlfriend. So I guess you could say I “caused” some of that. In my defense, I was probably doing both of them a favor in the long run.

Details?

For some 40 years I was under the impression that I was responsible for the fire that burned down the county courthouse in Elliott Co. KY.
Turned out, according to my uncle who lived there all his life, that it was set by someone working in the courthouse who was looking forward to an inconvienent audit.

This is just guesswork, but I believe that Paul in Saudi is ex-military so probably he is referring to this: United States invasion of Panama - Wikipedia

I broke a window as a kid by leaning back on chair that my dad told me not to do a hundred times. The chair went to far and I fell backwards into the window smashing it to pieces.

I broke the neighbors window with a ball. We were throwing the ball on the roof and then catching it as it rolled back off. I did not throw it with enough strenth and it smashed right into their kitchen window.

More recently I fried the motherboard on my home computer by using a dust buster to clean out the inside.

I inadvertantly caused a 20 car pile up and the subsequent temporary closure of the Skyway Bridge in Chicago. It was in the middle of a winter storm and the bridge was extremely icy. I was heading into the city and as I reached the crest of the bridge a gust of wind caught my car (a mustang) and blew it into the retaining wall. I bounced off, spun around and ended up crossways in the road. Oddly enough, no one hit me but some buffoon gaping on the opposite side of the road rear ended someone else and cars started piling up everywhere. They had to close the bridge for several hours while the mess was cleared. Luckily no one was hurt (as the bridge was so icy, no one was going very fast) and I escaped with only a flat tire and crumpled front fender. I still feel badly about it.

As someone close to the industry of replacement of the boxes, remediation of the soils in and around the box, etc. I can tell you it was likely in the neighborhood of $10-15 K.

I once drove an armored Jeep into a ditch.

As the inquiry concluded, it was hardly my fault. It was my first times out, and the idiots had only qualified me on the vanilla, unarmored version. Apparently, a light 4X4 handles very differently once you bolt 1.5 tons of steel plating and bulletproof glass onto it - especially when it comes to braking.

They estimated the damages at around $7000.

Unca Cecil’s story

I used to work at the airport as a linecrewman (one of the guys you see scurrying around moving planes and fueling them). I ran the “tug” (little tractor that pushes the planes back). One day I wasn’t paying attention and pushed one plane into another. Luckily they were small cargo planes (Cessna 414’s for those dopers who’re interested). Still, I’m told it was very expensive. Somehow I kept my job.

Gee, it’s too bad Paul Tebbits just passed away, he’d sure have a story to share!

 :frowning:  :frowning:  <---- me

Wow, and that’s even more in American dollars! :stuck_out_tongue:

Granted, but we’re all also wondering if he personally did anything. Perhaps he drove a tank through a house?

stupid :stuck_out_tongue:
