What's the most ridiculous stereotype you've heard about your group?

I would have just assumed that you were HOT!

As a black guy I find that some people are surpised to find out that I
-don’t like basketball
-don’t dance, because I don’t do it well
-don’t listen to hip hop music, I prefer Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush
-drive a jeep. I honestly had a guy tell me “Black people don’t own jeep!” when he saw me get into my car.

I live in Cameroon. I’ve been informed in all seriousness that in the United States there are many vampires and white people are the best sorcerers in the world.

Hehe… I introduced my bros to RPG’s, they introduced their friends… 20 years after that first game (where I ran into my first “girls can’t be warriors” GM, but he got overpowered by the rest of the players, including one whose sister had a blue belt in taekwondo), I still run into people who make the connection between my lastname and RPG “hey, you’re the XYZ’s sister? The one who used to roleplay?” “Still do” “WOOOOOOOAH THAT IS SO TOTALLY COOL”

Played, wrote and admin’d for a MUD for 8 years; currently tanking in WoW (first and second, I don’t have a problem with being 2.tank).

Here in the States, I’ve had a couple of white neo-Pagans tell me that blacks make natural magicians “because they are more in touch with their instincts.”

Hah, I’ve encountered this sentiment too. When I was living up North, people would ask me where I was from, and when I answered Mississippi, often there would be this pause and then a, “Oh. Mississippi.”

My biggest pet peeve is when people would put on (terrible) Southern accents when mocking someone for being stupid. Even my boyfriend did this and I had to speak with him about it. The usual response would be, “But they sound so stupid when they talk that way.” I would ask them if, after all the time they’d spent with me and the conversations we’d had, if they thought I sounded stupid. “But it’s different with you…” they’d try to say.

Another stereotype: not everyone from Mississippi is a Southern Baptist! I’m an atheist from a Methodist family. Down here on the Gulf Coast lots and lots of people are Catholic.

There is apparently a belief in some quarters that newly divorced women “of a certain age” are so horny that they will jump any young guy that hits on them. It’s irritating as hell.

Hey, babe. Um…want to fool around? I ask because, you know, you’re old and all. Figured you might be lonesome.

Well, I am feeling a little, uh, anxious…

I am. My dad is Jewish and my mom was Catholic. Like Raguleader, I was raised Catholic. So it’s more common than you’d thing.
