What's the name of this damn song?

I have heard this song twice on an oldie station. You’d think if it was an oldie, I’d have heard it before, but no; also, the DJ did not identify it either time! In addition, I can only remember a fragment or two of lyrics. Hopefully, one of you guys can fill me in, because it is a great song.

It sounds like the singer is Bob Dylan or Tom Petty. Fragment 1: " . . . she grew up tall in the Indiana night, she grew up straight, and she grew up right." Fragment 2 (chorus): “Oh, my my, oh, hell yes, honey put on that party dress.” Fragment 3 (chorus): “One last dance with Mary Jane, one more drink to kill the pain.”

Any guesses? Rock experts?

The singer is Tom Petty, the song is a few years old, not really an oldie. The name might be ‘Last Dance with Mary Jane’ but I’m really not sure and too lazy to look this morning.

It’s Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty.

Damn. That song was release after I was in the Navy.

I feel old. A golden mouldy as it were.

You heard that on an OLDIES station?

Bullshit. HAD to have been a classic rock station. The song came out at some point when I was in high school. I’m 22.

I am NOT that old.

Nahh, I’ve heard some pretty wacked oldies stations–anything older than about 5 years is fair game. It’s stupid, but they do exist.

See the lyrics here and here. The two versions do not agree exactly.

Thanks, guys. I thought it was Tom Petty! I guess it was more of a “classic” rock station than an oldies, though I don’t see that much of a difference.

Drain Bead, senility is just around the corner. Those eight-year olds you see playing in the schoolground right now are going to HATE your music, your clothes, and your TV shows in about 12 years. Got 401(k)?

Has anyone seen the video for this song? Tom Petty’s got a very weird sense of humor, sometimes, don’t he?
