CHoward’s (the folks best known for their “violet” confections; they have a website) square peppermints that come in a foil-wrapped roll are excellent, made with peppermint oil and real sugar; they also do a wintergreen and an addictive lemon mint …
I find these insanely addictive. There’s something about the crumbly texture that really works for me, so I have to be careful not to even have them in the house!
I used to manage a hotel and we would put these on the front desk for guests. They would take them in handfuls. Very popular.
As an FYI to the OP, just in case… the tub of these that **jrsone **linked via ebay is also available at Costco for about 1/4 of that price.
While I like the airy hard peppermints, what I really adore are the soft chewy peppermints.
I also get the buttermints in peppermint in individually wrapped sealed bags. I get them from a advertising/promotions group by the crate. Perfect for carrying in a pocket without worrying about getting lint into the package. The hard candies in the wrappers will get lint migration into the wrapper. Individually sealed bags is the key.
Plus, I order them in St. Patrick’s day theme, for the obvious reason.
The worst is at Taco Bell, sometimes they give red-and-white candies that look like mints, but they actually have a strong cinnamon flavor! Who wants that?
You saved me time linking those! Goddamn, those are one of the highlights of December for me. Omnomnom!
I wholeheartedly agree!
And this is coming from someone who does not care for peppermint and loves fruity ones - but by jiminy, making the red / white striped ones be anything but peppermint is just WRONG.
To the OP: you must never go to a restaurant near me. They have a bowl of “peppermint” candy (the striped lozenges) by the register - but the giveaway is that they have colors other than red. So if you ever see a bowl that has purple, orange and green, you know the red ones are not gonna be mint.
You guys just had to mention butter mints. And I just had to buy some. Now I suppose I’ll have to eat them.
