“Thoth” Go ahead and try to pronounce that. It feels like you’re trying to spit out you front teeth. Its awkward and uncomfortable. “Soth” rolls off the tongue, and that’s why I’m the way I am
I will purchase your soul in exchange for incredibly infectious timing and a hell of a groove.
I’m a scubadiver, and at the time I joined the Dope (2005), I considered myself a little long in the tooth to be a princess. So, I upgraded to queen!
When I was little my mom, sister and I were the Three Damsels. Now we are CA Damsel, NV Damsel and CT Damsel.
My mom is an astrologist and my astrological sign is Cancer, also called a Moon Child – I suspect because of the negative connotation with the “other” cancer. I had named my video production company Moonchild Pictures, so, without giving much thought to it, I named my SDMB handle (and some other sites’ user names) as such.
But I hate the name. I cringe when I see it, actually.
While evidence I’ve observed suggests astrology has has some accuracy/legitimacy, I’ve found little to indicate that it benefits you in the long run. Plus, the name seems pretentious and draws images of some over-the-top New Ager, which seems to run counter with about 95% of Dopers’ beliefs. While I do find interest in many things cosmic, I envy those with more clever names like WOOKINPANUB, which had me howling with laughter when the reference occurred to me.
I play blues harp. Back in college, a girlfriend did a stylized picture of me around the words “Stu’s Blues.” Would have made a great sign for the outside of a bar. As it is, it’s the first thing you see when you come in my place.
I originally had a different username, but it was the username I used everywhere on the interwebs, and I thought about it for a long time. My name didn’t have to be original, it just had to have some meaning.
“Anaamika” is Hindi for “the girl with no name”, or more colloquially, “anonymous”. Appropriate for a message board.
Mine is short for Alton Signal Guy. I restored a circa 1912 railroad semaphore signal and the universally cooperative railfan community started calling me that. It’s been a kick.
That’s really cute. I like it.
You know you can request a moderator to change it, right? I’ve thought of changing mine, but the feedback on that idea has been negative, so olives it is.
Every time I read that username I see ‘‘Wook in a pub.’’
Guess someday I’ll make something up, but its my real name.
“WebSurfer” would be too mundane so I changed it up.
Is the negative feedback because they like your name or because they think it’s a bad idea for one to change his/her name in general?
Internet-eons ago (mid-90’s, gasp!) I was obsessed playing an online MMO flight sim called Warbirds. My handle was Gargoyle (“grgyle” actually, due to the 6-character name limit). I concatenated the two when signing up for this board.
Favorite movie. Plus wonderful nostalgic sci-fi pulp connotations.
