My screen name on the SDMB or "how cool will I be with THIS rockin' screen name!?"

Okay, so I’m new to this board and brought along the same screen name I use on other message boards (snore!) and it CRACKS ME UP to see some of your screen names!! Would you please take a minute of your time and kindly explain the origin of your screen name? I know some, like mine, are a bit self-explanatory…but feel free!

One (obvious) Yogini (female who practices yoga)

Thanks everyone for playing! If we had some lovely parting gifts it would be great but WTF…

Namaste. Yogini

Welcome OneYogini

Here is one of the many threads on the subject of how we chose our screen names.

Mine is a character from a Discworld book. I was new to discworld so hastily chose a username based on the few characters I knew. Now that I have read more I know it was a bad decision. My favourite character is Sam Vimes.

My real name is jim.

I deplicated a letter at each end.

How rockin’ is that? I crack myself up.

Sorry, did I say “crack myself up”? I meant “send myself to sleep with ennui”.

Duplicate, I mean. :smack:

How does one go about deplicating a letter?

mine is pretty dull, but I have been sticking with it since high school… (about 10 years now)

It was the name of my band in high school, so i made that my e-mail address, then the band broke up right after high school, but I didn’t feel like changing my e-mail address…
I have been on 2 other MB’s since high school, and they all know me as merge… kind of a name i cant get rid of.

Lobsang…thanks for the light reading! lol!

Jim - you crack ME up! hee hee

Merge - - I like it!

Keep’em comin’ for as long as you care to indulge a newbie!

Thanx!

Another chance for me to point out that I am neither a nurse nor a Carmen.
Recently, a fossil was found whose Latin name meant Swimming thing with big schlong. I thought that would be a good user name for me, but my *Latin stinks. So with my luck, I probably would have ended up changing my name to big swimming thing.

*My Doctor says My Latin!
(sorry…couldn’t resist a bad pun.)

Thanks for the info NC - - I’m still digesting the “giant heaving well-armed creature” - - is that the character you played while “gaming” online or is it a “real” physical characteristic? (I have this “thing” for well-defined tricep muscles. Yummy!) Just curious.

…and big schlongs…LMAO! JK!

No really, size doesn’t matter (unless it’s really small).

Wait…let me see your hands…hold them up to the screen…

When I first joined the board, I had no idea what the place was like and didn’t anticipate sticking around, thinking that I would likely quickly tire of the puerile infighting and flaming that is so pervasive among most every Internet discussion forum. As such, I put very little thought into a screen name and fired in the first thing that came to mind - “Morkfromork”.

It wasn’t long before I realized that SDMB is an anomoly among 'Net boards and that I was going to stick around. Though I immediately regretted picking such a poor name, it was several months before I actually did anything about it. When I was finally fed up with my name, I thought a little harder about a name that better represented me.

My name comes from my reputation among those who know me as enjoying the benefit of being the funniest person in any given room (though I’ve found that my sense of humour just doesn’t seem to translate well to the Board). I’m also a bit of a budding Buddhist. I never consciously put the two together…it just popped into my head whilst considering my dilemma. As soon as I heard it spoken by my mind, I knew that it was what I wanted.

I respectfully requested of the admin that they switch me to my new epithet. They kindly accomodated my request, and thus here I stand before you.

I have a muffin fetish but am a notoriously poor speller.

Mnemosyne is the greek goddess of memory. I was choosing a nick for something else several years ago, and I couldn’t remember another one that I had briefly used, so I thought I should joke about how awful my memory is. And I just like the word. It’s fun to say.

My story is astoundingly similar to Lobsang’s. Basically the main difference is I now wish I had chosen “Dangerous Beans” as my screen name.

BTW, welcome to the boards.

Mine stands for a nickname (one of oh, so many) that my brothers used to call me when we were growing up together.
It shall not be revealed in its entirety, though.

I have just changed my nick to this one, after a bit of an abscence from the boards.

“odd-socks” came from a conversation about how the washing machine / dryer just tends to eat one sock from every pair, leaving you with, well, odd socks!

Welcome.

Thanks WorldEater - - I saw on one of the links above your explanation for your screen name. lol!

Welcome! And thanks for giving me a chance to explain my name!

Like Standup Karmic, I used to have a boring name – DanielWithrow is my real name, chosen because I didn’t figure I’d hang around here very much.

When I discovered I was addicted, I asked the mods to change my name to something more interesting: thus Left Hand of Dorkness.

The name is based primarily on a fantastic book by Ursula Le Guin, Left Hand of Darkness. I’m a leftist, you see, and left-handed, and I’m a big old Dungeons and Dragons-playing dork. So it’s one a them multilayered names, don’tcha see.

It has the added benefits of giving my less-intelligent detractors something easy to grab onto. If someone responds to my posts by calling me LeftyDork or something similar, I can be sure that’ll be the height of cleverness in their post and can comfortably skip the rest of it :).
