What is the origin of your SDMB screen name?

And if it’s a famous character, why that one?

This is mine: it’s not from The Simpsons. It actually predates the Simpsons.

When I was in High School a friend and I dressed as nerds for a Halloween concert my school would put on. I actually was a nerd for real but we dressed as like Revenge of the Nerds nerds with bad clashing colors, greasy hair, pocket protectors and thick glasses. The whole thing . And while in the costume, I told people my name was Quimby Alowishus because that sounded like a nerdy name. Alowishus was from a Daffy Duck cartoon and Quimby came from a Burt Reynolds movie no one remembers called Paternity. I had never actually seen the movie but a friend who did joked about a scene where someone suggests Quimby as a baby name at some point and I had remembered it.

Because of that Halloween, Quimby stuck as one of the many nicknames (some nice and some not so nice) I had in High School. And when I went to college the Internet was just starting to be a thing (the web didn’t even exist yet but email and Usenet did) so I used Quimby as my first user name for email. Actually I had to use Quimby2 because someone actually had Quimby believe it or not. But from there it was my go to user name for stuff including this message board.

So what is your story?

I own a red canoe.

My career was being a baker.

It’s my actual initials/lastname

Many years ago I adopted three four-month-old kittens, orange tiger boys. Great deal on the adoption fee, too – buy two, get one free! Well, I was only looking to adopt a pair, but I couldn’t break up the set, right?

And I named them Eddy, Teddy, and Freddy.

It’s the first two letters of my first name and last name squished together.

I like gas station snacks?

I love the smell.

In honor of my father who was a printer.

My screen name? Now, that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time…a long time.

Mine is my name spelled backwards.

“Hello there.”

My screen name is from a reputation of being a know-it-all. Plus an unfortunate tendency toward punnish cleverness in spelling (gnosis being Greek for knowledge).

Nickname from childhood, it came from my habit of using my hands to dig out golfer holes.

Almost a quarter-century ago, when I was a bright-eyed college freshman, I took one of those stupid personality tests - this one purported to inform you which Lucky Charm marshmallow you most closely resembled.

Later that night, I needed to sign up for a hotmail email account. Not getting the first umpteen zillion tries, I went with my marshmallow.

You can piece together the rest, I’m sure.

I ski.

Carl Spackler? Is that you??

My father in law rarely referred to me by name. He called me "That longhaired son of a bi%ch my daughter married. I married her in 1975. Later, in 1996 when I needed an AOL screen name longhair75 seemed like just the thing. Not long ago I shortened it to LH75 here at the SDMB

My Daddy nicknamed me beckdawrek.
For reasons.
He put me in ballet class after I broke my leg falling off a curb.

He had a little diddy he sang, “beckdawrek from Georgia Tech. She fell down and broke her neck…”

the first three letters of my email address are an acronym for “crop headed whore” See, WAY back when I first went online I was doing a lot of counterpicketing, here in Topeka, against the Westboro Baptist Church. Their women were not allowed to cut their hair, and they would all yell at us, calling us that phrase. We laughed our head off at them. One time Fred was so upset at our laughter that he tried to get the cops to arrest us for disturbing the peace.

I happened to be reading a collection of Little Nemo in Slumberland strips the week I picked this screen name.
