What's the tallest unclimbed mountain?

If I wanted to impress my girlfriend by climbing the tallest unconquored mountain on Earth, where would I go? Is there anything big left still unachieved?

Here’s a neato list of 7000+ meter mountains that are still unclimbed.

Thanks Earl Snake-Hips Tucker!

Lhotse Middle…I got your number! Here I come!

WTF? >50 (well, maybe >100, I didn’t bother to count) unclimbed?

What happened to us? Where’s our pride?

No, seriously. Why doesn’t anyone climb those?

Too late; Earl’s site was dated 1999. The mountain you’re looking for is Gangkar Phunsum apparently.

It’s cold.

Seriously, some are a lot steeper than Everest. Much more technical and you have to consider how small of a time window the weather limits you to.

Ok, scratch Lhotse Middle and on to Gangkar Phunsum.

Thanks, everton. Looks like that left side ridge just might be manageable…

Well, it may not be the tallest unclimbed mountain, but Mt. Vinson in the Antactic may very well be the least accessible. And at 16,067’ tall, it’s not exactly a molehill.

If you’re interested, they’re trying to put together an expedition to climb it as we speak…

Inaccessible, maybe. Unclimbed, no. The link you provide offers guided climbing trips, and includes pictures from near the summit. Googling “Mt Vinson” gives many links to ascent stories.

It’s also worth noting that ski-equipped aircraft make fairly short work of getting to and around Antartica. Your link suggests that anyone with $26k should be able to get there with little strain.

Er, make that Antarctica.

Ah well, just a thought…
