The one where Homer and his friends get drunk and drive through Bart’s school, resulting in a curfew in Springfield. That was the complete polar opposite of funny.
that has got to be the dumbest PLOT ever, but it had funny parts. As a big brother with a little sister, if she had ever been left in charge when 8 and i 10, mom would have returned home to her taped to a chair in the front yard while i danced around the burning garage dressed as an indian.
Personally, I can’t really pick a worst episode (I don’t think I’ve seen the really bad ones). I can pick the two types of episode that I always hate, though.
“See Our Celebrity Guest Star” - I’ve never seen one where a celebrity played themself that failed to at least annoy me. They don’t have the celebrity to anything funny, and they always do some kind of ass-kissing for the guest.
“We have 20 minutes of show!” There are a number of episodes, especially recent ones, where they have a good first 20 minutes or so. It will be funny, there’s an interesting situation, and then BLAMMO the writers have no idea what to do and get a monkey with a head wound to finish it off.
I’m gonna have to agree with Riboflavin here. Any episode which features pointless guest stars (examples: Mel Gibson, Britney Spears, REM, The Who, and so forth) generally tends to suck beyond belief. It was much better when they didn’t have to ass-kiss the guest or put them in a positive role (examples: the Ramones, Barry White, George Harrison).
Also, any ep where they throw it away in the last two minutes, such as the episode where Homer starts a daycare centre. Godamn, that ending sucked.
You can throw in pizza also. As the expression goes, all three are alike because even when they’re bad, they’re still pretty good.
:o Sorry, forgot to include hijack tags. Resume Simpson bashing.
I almost said pizza but I figured more people could relate to sex.
Maybe the one where the kids took over the school and tied Principal Skinner in a “ball sack”. They used the lame obvious “ball sack” double entendre twice in that show. How’s that for being out of ideas?
I dunno, in my time I’ve had some realllllllllly bad … pizza.
Funny. I absolutely LOVED some of your least favorite episodes. The Mel Gibson one cracked me up. “Where’s that kid with my latte” and Homer as the Press Corp Member in the new ending of the movie. HILARIOUS! Let’s not say that was worse than Godfather III or anyhting else we can’t take back? “Hi, Meester Gibson!”
PS- Mission Accomplished (high Five!)
I was going to say this is true about the older bad episodes listed. Before a few seasons ago, this was certainly the case. But over the last few seasons I can’t recall many lines or moments that are quotable or memorable.
(Except for Tales From the Public Domain, “Do you have diahrea, cuz’ I have diahrea!” I really like it when the Simpsons have episodes where they play historical or fictious characters)
But I mark the shark jumping moment as Saddlesore. I feel that many episodes since have been worse, but I vote for this episode as THE worst, because it symoblized the downfall in my eyes. Since that episode, there have been so few VERY GOOD OR BETTER episodes.
Bob Newhart at Krusty the Clown’s funeral?
Now wait a minute, the episode a couple weeks ago with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards etc. was REALLY funny. As soon as it was over, I wished I’d taped it so I could watch it again.
Stephen King and Amy Tan’s appearances were also quite good, for how short they were.
“Call Marge RE: Horror”
Anybody mention that Michael Jackson episode yet, the one where Homer meets the big white guy in the nuthouse?
Sappy Lisa-centered dreck.
No, it’s “It tastes like burning!” Ralph wasn’t dying. He just eated the purpleberries.
The Mel Gibson one is priceless despite the plot problems, because of the line near the end, “It was symbolism. He was mad!”
Saddlesore Galactica always cracks me up. It makes fun of the “superfans” who had been overusing the phrase “worst episode ever” on the discussion lists since season 8. If you don’t like the troll jockeys, fine I understand, but at least credit the fact that the segment was a pretty good parody of modern musical theater.
The worst episode by a long shot was the horrid “Moaning Lisa” from season 1, pc #7G06. Ugh. To think back that this was the first episode I saw on TV, it’s a wonder I thought to ever watch more of the Simpsons. We had finally gotten a Fox affiliate, and I was excited about the Simpsons, but after seeing that one I thought, “jeez, what’s the big deal.”
Head over to www.nohomers.net if you want more in depth discussion of this sort of thing, we can never cover it adequately here.
I completely defend the first and second seasons. In fact, some of my favorite episodes are from season 2.
Simpson and Delilah, Bart vs. Thanksgiving, Itchy & Scratchy & Marge, The Way We Was, Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Bart’s Dog Gets an F, Lisa’s Substitute…
I’d wouldn’t trade any single one of those episode for anything that’s been produced in the last 5 years. I wouldn’t trade Lisa’s Substitute or The Way We Was for any show period.
I guess I’d have to say the one where Maude Fladers dies, because it was at that moment I decided I just didn’t like watching the Simpsons anymore. By that time I felt the bad episodes had far outweighed the good, and I didn’t even feel like I was watching the same characters that I had been over the years. Armin Tanzerian was, yes, grating, and any new episode with a guest star generally makes me want to stab my eyes.
Oh, and I like Moaning Lisa, too. My favorite episodes are the one’s that aren’t just comedy comedy comedy the whole way through. I like the ones that were able to be funny while being touching and developing character at the same time.
Maggie’s first word gets me every time.
Well…I think tonight’s episode pretty much answers that question.
Yeah, I don’t know. 95% of the episodes from the 1999 season on are tied for Wost Ever. I couldn’t even stand to watch the newest one, I changed the channel when Marge got breast implants accidently.
The show has gone from being witty, intelligent, thoughtful and even heart warming to purile, crowd pleasing, offensive and moronic. The difference in quality from any episode in season, say, 3, and any episode from last season makes me wonder if the same people are even involved at all any more.
The Simpsons used to be a show I could watch for the intelligent humour and commentary on life, with sharp dialogue, excellent cast preformances, and not be intellectually insulted by the writing. But now, it’s just…awful.
Oh boy! Tonight (11/24/02) was by far the worst Simpsons ever. I almost feel privileged to have witnessed the actual “shark-jumping” moment of the series, for if it hasn’t jumped before now, tonight would have put it over the edge…
