I know there’s something I’m missing here - all I know is that Obama wants to close Gitmo, and in another article I read on the subject it mentioned that no country wants to take some of the prisoners held there.
These guys specifically, who were charged with plotting 9/11, seem to want to expedite their possible executions now that Obama has been elected according to the article.
I just don’t understand it - what is likely to happen to them when Gitmo is shut down that they would rather hurry up and get executed?
I perceive the outcome they are pursuing is to become “martyrs” against big, bad America.
Execution following a kangaroo military court or bravely choosing execution rather than submit yourself to it’s laughable pretenses of justice? That’s something. Get put in prison for 25 years, life, or executed following a year long trial in which you were appointed competent representation, able to examine, introduce, and object to evidence when feasible, and generally granted the makings of a fair trial? Not only are you still probably stuck in prison for the vast majority of the remainder of your natural life, you don’t get anything out of it.
This whole thing is a mess. I don’t believe for a second that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had anything to do with 9/11. Apparently he was considered a nut job by the others who kept him at arms length. (To be considered a nut job by terrorists says something.)
So he’s just trying to get glory and martyrdom thru the backdoor.
The US knows this and has been stalling the trial because they know they don’t have a real case that real court would tolerate for 5 minutes. The feds know the clock is running out before the new folks take over and starting digging into the crap that they’ve been doing the last 8 years. So, time to finally bring them before a “judge” and hope they hang themselves.
