What's this data port on my cable remote for?

I was changing the batteries on the remote for my cable box tonight, and I notice there was a data port of some kind in the battery compartment. It looks about shape of an ethernet RJ-45 port, only a little larger. The pin configuration is different, there are six pins right in the middle, arranged 2x3, not in a line at the bottom like an ethernet port.

Anybody know what that is for?

JP1 programming interface for UEL remote controls. Basically, it’s used to program the remote with additional functionality and device compatitibility.

Gah! That’s supposed to say “UEI remotes”.

Cool! I bet I can blow that up real good! Hey Comcast, my remote doesn’t work anymore!

Neither does my spelling ability, apparently. “Compatitibility”?? :smack:
