I don’t read the comics very much any more, but every now and then I’ll snag a paper and read them. What’s going on in Doonesbury? The whole thing’s reading like a pro-attack Iraq propaganda piece. I would think that Garry Trudeau would take the opposite stance, given his dislike of Republicans. Am I being whooshed?
I don’t think Trudeau has changed his stripes much. I haven’t caught all of them, but the Iraq pieces seem to still have the sharp edge of the left to them. I just miss the visciousness of the early Doonesbury. But, as with all of us, age seems to have dulled the edge a bit. I think he might just have trouble drawing a caricature of a caricature.

Hmm. Seems as if he’s tweaking all the usual suspects.

Huh? In the past coupla weeks, you may have gotten that impression from the UN inspectors questioning “Radioactive yoghurt?” If you follow the story, though, it turns out that the cows have been drinking runoff from a radium watch-dial factory. Still, as it becomes clear that it’s innocent industrial contamination and not a WMD plant, the reaction from the White House is “Good news! We’ve found a pretext!”
Which stories were seeming like “Attack Iraq” propaganda to you? I don’t get it.
I saw that much of it, but I thought that the radium bit was meant to be a lame cop-out on the part of the Iraqis. (Didn’t see the part with White House saying, “Good news! We’ve found a pretext!” Maybe I skipped that panel.) Perhaps I’m over-analyzing the thing, I don’t know. Just the whole “feel” seemed to indicate that Trudeau was advocating a war with Iraq. (After all, one could cause at least panic if they set off a bomb stuffed full of dynamite and radium.)
I think it may have been a day or so after the “Radioactive yoghurt?” strip.
Following JonScribe’s link, I’m guessing you must be reacting to this strip, which does appear to give that impression.
WTF?
“Okay, so it’s not our top seller.”
Best punch-line Trudeau’s had in years.
If we do attack Iraq, I can’t wait to see the “Duke as warlord” series that will inevitably accompany it.
