As of midnight east coast time, it seems to have change and is now a static, grey version of the normal logo.
Huh. Today (8-Sep-2010) it’s a sort of grey color. Still no explanation.
I was sad I missed this, until I read down the thread. You’re a very naughty person, you know. I wish I’d seen somebody try it, though.
Yep. Gray.
They’re clearly ‘up to something’.
When you type into the box, though, the gray letters start turning color, one by one.
Now, when you search, it automatically goes into “drop down” match mode…
I’m not sure I like it.
ETA: No more “I’m Feeling Lucky”? Super Sad Face!
As a coincidence, I posted that on the five-year anniversary of…that. Go figure.
ETA: Wha-oops…five years and a day.
It is the intorduction of the new Google Instant, which searches as you type by trying to guess what you are looking for.

It doesn’t slow things down on my computer so it seems pretty cool, actually.
What’s up with people who go to the Google homepage anyway? (I mean regularly - I heard about this and checked it out but on a normal day I never do) It’s kind of pointless since you can just use the search bar normally installed in the browser chrome to the right of the location bar on Firefox and IE, or simply type a search straight into the location bar on Chrome or Firefox. Do people really love extraneous clicks or what?
ETA: and before you say “my homepage is Google” - why?! There are so many other good choices for a homepage than a completely superfluous white page with a search bar that you already have integrated in your browser anyway.
For those of you missing “I’m Feeling Lucky”, Google Instant (the search while you type feature) gives you the Lucky option if you mouse over a suggested search term.
Any news on the integration of Google Instant with iGoogle? I’d love to have the instant search, but can’t give up my RSS feeds.
I agree with you, however, many many times I do a search from the toolbar and when the results come up it isn’t really what I wanted and have to do another search, which is just as easily done on the webpage that is already up from the previous search. I can see how this would be useful in that regard.
Google has now implemented “Google Instant” which is dynamic results as you type, and integrated Auto-Complete.
Many problems with this have already come up, including only showing the first ten results per page (I had it set to 100, but that gets overridden), and the search results no longer can be revisited through the browser History or the Awesome Bar.
I have turned it off.
Doesn’t Chrome already have that (search suggestions)?
It’s brilliant! Google found out how to spam you as you type a search! This guys are geniuses :dubious:
