I just saw Blade: Trinity. The signs at the police station were in English, subtitled in what I’m pretty sure was Esperanto. Later there’s a scene where King is watching TV – an old Star Trek episode, dubbed in (I think) Esperanto and subtitled in English. WTF? Is this some kind of Hollywood in-joke?
Also, why is the movied called Trinity? There’s no character named Trinity, no plot point that would suggest such a name or concept. Is it just a pretentious way of saying Blade III?

I assume it is intended as a double meaning. It is indeed the third Blade movie, however it also has Blade taking up with two “partners”, 1 + 2 = 3. A group of three, a trinity.
That got right past me – I was thinking of the Nightstalkers as a group, not just Hannibal and Abigail. But they are the only ones who actually go into the field and kick ass with Blade, so I guess it fits.
But what’s the Esperanto all about? Was there an Esperanto theme in the Blade comic book? Is David Goyer an Esperantist?

The “Esperanto for effect” thing has been done before as well. Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator was set in a city where the ghetto of the oppressed minority was all in Esperanto. And in Gattaca, all the announcements were bilingual English and Esperanto.
