What's with the giant car logos on cars?

I’ve noticed in my neighbourhood (majority Hispanic if that makes a difference) that a lot of the cars are “decorated” with – the logo or the name of the very marque of the car that it is. What’s the point of this? The damn thing already says “Toyota” or has the Toyota logo in three of four different places … why block up the whole rear window with a gigantic Toyota logo? What’s up with this crap? I’ve seen it mostly on Toyotas and Hondas, but also on other car brands. What’s the point of repeating the marque in giant size?

I dunno what’s up with that but I can tell you it’s not exclusive to the Hispanic community. From my limited observation, it seems to me the cheaper/crappier the car the more likely one will find one of the aformentioned symbols.

It’s a socio-economic thing. You wouldn’t understand.

I’ve seen this on a couple of cars around here. It’s tacky as hell.

Maybe it’s the Hispanic equivalent of those Peeing Calvin stickers

Heh. Imagine a giant Mercedes logo in the rear window.

Hey, I’m poor enough to have to drive a cheap Corolla myself. But I’ve never felt the need to write COROIIA in giant letters on my car. (And that’s right, it was two Is. They must have run out of Ls at the giant car logo sticker store.)

I’ve noticed that this phenomenon is most common among “import enthusiasts” and pickup truck owners. You never see a giant Buick logo on anything. Except maybe Buick dealerships.

Oh, and the more common vehicle-decoration stereotype for hispanics is, of course, the last name in calligraphy in an arch across the rear window.

Around here it’s the old english gothic face, which is cool–

But it’s ALL CAPS.

A frickin’ abomination.

Around here it seems to be the guys who put all their money into fancyfying their (illegal street racing) sports cars. Of course, they’re the ones who have FUBU or Hilfiger or Old Navy or whatever it is these days emblazoned across all their clothing too.

[mini rant] Gosh darn it! If someone wants me to do their advertising for them, they’d better pay ME for the privilege! [/mini rant]

I think it’s creeped over to the real logos that the factory puts on the cars. Those seem to be bigger these days too.
