What's with this Lleyton Hewitt gesture?

Look directly at the palm of your hand. Now bend the wrist so all your fingers are pointing to your eyes. Have a grim expression on your face.

Hewitt likes to do this during a match and I wonder what it means.

Is he blowing on his palm?

No, he doesn’t blow on his palm.

His palm and fingers are more or less parallel to the ground. He seems to fix his stare on the tips of this fingers and tries to look mean as hell. All in all, it appears very studied and quite juvenile.

I don’t know if I’ve described this gesture adequately, but what I’ve said is the best I can do.

Then I would guess it’s a way of getting re-focused after a point.

Is he stretching out his wrist or his palm? Which hand does he use. If it’s his right, that’s my guess. I’m watching a match now and I havent seen it yet.

Well, he just put Nadal away, so you’ll have a chance to see him do it in his next match.

You speak of the Vicht…

I read it was some kind of cobra/snake deal… though the relationship to good tennis-playing would be a bit tenuous if thats the case.

That’s my guess. Sounds like Lleyton is expanding his repertoire of irritating court gestures and mannerisms.

He probably wants to be different and not fiddle and stare at his racket strings like everyone else does.

Thanks for the link. Midaro. It explains all.

“The Vicht™ is a congratulatory hand-gesture created by former ATP touring pro Niclas Kroon used to celebrate his on-court exploits.”

Kroon created years ago it to offset his brother’s on-court (and obnoxious) self-congratulatory fist pump. Lleyton seems to have adopted The Vicht.

I try to avoid watching Hewitt matches, so maybe that’s why I never saw it until yesterday.
