I almost wish we had a forum for any topic that has such a clear split whenever anyone opines about it.
What is this fascination with feeling obligated - it’s almost a compulsion - to defend one’s decisions so vehemently? The decision to eat what you want…or the decision to drive what you want?
And what is the fascination with bashing overweight folks, or bashing SUV drivers?
These threads are always heavy on views, pages, and ‘attack’-‘defend’ positions/styles.
IMHO, all your ranting and holier- than-though attitudes accomplish nothing. You don’t like SUVs? Then DO something CONSTRUCTIVE about it, beyond whining and stereotyping.
You don’t like people who are ‘overweight’ by various incoherent standards? Then DO something CONSTRUCTIVE about it.
IMHO, that’s enough with the destructive, ignorance-promoting and whiney attitudes that drag down the very boards here to fight ignorance. Starting NEW threads is a waste, when so much space has been wasted in other threads.
IMHO, bitching and moaning are not going to accomplish anything. Offer a resolution and act upon it. But give it up with the threads of attack/defend. Enough!
And Cecil, get your ass involved and set the records straight about two very difficult topics that breed ignorance!
People are easily offended. You can’t go in there and say, “I work out and eat right and that’s why I’m not overweight,” without someone freaking out.
I think the SUV issue is a little more cut and dry. I mean, it’s proven that SUV’s cause more pollution and take up more space. When people try to argue that, it’s only because they want to justify their decision to own one.
Both topics are destined to be the same argument over and over again.
Yeah, I think the two topics are different. The SUV threads really are more of a straight up pro v. anti thing, but the fat threads aren’t about pro v. anti being fat. They’re usually about whether or not someone was being offense when they used the word “fat” and whether or not that’s as bad as offending someone on the basis of race, sexual orientation, etc.
You’re right that both topics are rather overplayed. A better analogy may be the anti-SUV threads and the anti-Bush threads.
What I really hate though is in one of these threads where someone says “Hey, what’s your proof that Bush wants to kill all gay folks and turn their bodies into gasoline?” and then that person is labelled a Bush supporter just cuz they don’t jump on every anti-Bush bandwagon.
I’d just like to see either an SUV-bashing thread that doesn’t mention Geo Metros, or a fat thread that doesn’t mention glandular conditions. Haven’t come across either yet.
