What's wrong with my coffee grinder?

I have a KitchenMaid burr grinder. It has been working fine for over a year. But this morning instead of depositing the grinds into the cup where they’re supposed to go, the grinder is creating coarser grinds and shooting them out horizontally from the grinder in what would be a slapstick humor sort of way except I didn’t really like having coffee grounds sprayed all over me. And they were big so they hurt?

I assume this means I need to do a little bit more thorough cleaning than I normally do?

Is it this KitchenAid grinder, or is it actually a brand called KitchenMaid?

If it is the grinder linked, is it actually pushing the grounds out with so much force that the metal flap over the spout isn’t stopping them? I’ve never encountered that, but I did have some problems after a particularly oily batch of beans. The grinder was clogging, and the grounds were a bit lumpy coming out. I ended up giving it a thorough cleaning (taking off the glass globe, toothbrush all around the top part, and a good reaming with a toothpick in the spout).

One more thing: are you grinding flavored coffee beans? I’ve heard (in a few places) that you shouldn’t grind more than a pound of flavored beans in the machine before you run a batch of regular beans thru it (or something else that is less oily–we used rice crispies to clean the machine when I worked at a Borders with a cafe).

Thanks. It is a KitchenAid, I just remembered the name wrong. I guess it will be time to clean all of it out and that should fix the problem.

And they’re not flavored beans. This is my pound of Kona that I get sent to me each month. I don’t want anything to go wrong with it!

The title of this thread sounds like an old blues song! :stuck_out_tongue:

Casey has been messing with your kitchen appliances while you’re asleep.
You thought he was hiding and scared. No. He was hiding and plotting.
Watch your step…

Turns out, it just needed to be cleaned out.
