What's wrong with two national champions, anyway?

[Sorry if this is a bit late…work schedule kinda got to me.]

Okay, the BCS is a colossal joke, everyone knows that. And the old system wasn’t much better. The only way to get a legitimate national championship is a playoff, but there are just too many obstacles to that.

And yet…we were treated to a classic Rose Bowl matchup where USC dominated from start to finish and resoundingly cemented their claim to the national title. This after all the concerns about them being completely shafted by the BCS.

And then LSU vs. Oklahoma, which many experts feared would be completely anticlimactic and which generated next to no buzz up until kickoff, turned into a riveting, hard-fought, back-and-forth battle that came down to the final possession. With the incredible drama of LSU in a position to win its first national championship in almost half a century and Oklahoma desperately trying to avoid making hash of their entire season with a second loss at the worst possible time.

Now, let’s see if I have this right: An idiotic system nobody likes nearly made an utter mockery of an entire sport, and the season could’ve very easily ended in disaster. And the end result was two great football games, two completely deserving champions, and twice as many elated fans. Folks, this was a freaking miracle. It could NOT have culminated any better for anyone involved.

So what if there wasn’t one more game? All things considered, could it have ended any better? Until we actually get a workable playoff system, isn’t the next best thing having the champion…or champions…be deserving?

C’mon. Look at how those two schools celebrated. I can’t be completely wrong.

You’re absolutely right. It’s college football (or any other sport), it’s supposed to be fun and part of the fun is arguing about it.

Hey, why don’t we make EVERY team national champions? Then we’ll all be happy!

Champion, to me, means ONE. Only one per level of sport. There is only ever one NBA Champion, one NFL Champion, one NHL Champion, one NCAA Basketball/Soccer/Hockey/Softball/etc. champion per year. Not two.

So that’s my problem with it. Champion means best/ultimate winner/the one left standing when all the dust has settled/on top of the mountain. There is no room for two there, to me.
