Thanks!
Whaddaya know, I might be a B person - that sounds intriguing. For some reason I had the idea that O is dominant, but apparently no one allele is dominant or recessive.
Aaaand another A+. As is fella bilong missus flodnak. That would give our kids a good chance of being A+ too, but they’ve never had a reason to be tested.
Dad is AB+, Mom is O+. My brother and I are A+, my sister is B+. My high school bio teacher got unreasonably excited about this, as it was a Textbook Example Of The Inheritance Of Blood Types or something like that.
AB+ is, of course, the universal receiver. Dad said when the Navy doctor told him his blood type, he added, “So if we get into any trouble, you can take whatever’s left over.” Comforting, no?
You’re welcome. The O is recessive to both A and B, but A and B are co-dominant. Is kind of nifty.
AB+ as well. It’s not useless, but it can only be given to other AB+ people (who can actually be pumped up with any type) but if they can give you AB+ it saves them using theor stocks of the ‘more useful’ types.
A+. Found out when I first gave blood.
Dad is A1 M (Rh1 homozygous)
Mom is A1 MN (Rh1 homozygous)
I’m O MN (Rh1 heterozygous)
Whatever all that means.
I find that both my parents being homo while I’m hetero to be amusing. In a non-science kinda way.
This just reminded me: one of my sisters told me she was type O. Since I’m an AB and my mom had told me that she and my dad are an A and a B, I told my sister that she must be adopted because an A and a B can only have an AB. I new she would never look it up on the internet to confirm so I finally got my revenge for years of her telling me I was adopted due to my red hair. I did tell her the truth a bit later when I realized that she wasn’t bothered by the thought that our dad couldn’t really be her dad. The truth finally annoyed her .
I’ve spent my whole life without the faintest idea what my blood type is. I don’t even know how to find out. The subject seems never to have come up.
Well, I found out by donating blood when I was 17. Both of my sisters found out later on. I don’t remember if it was their pre-wedding bloodwork or when they got pregnant. Having never done either, I don’t know which would require it. One of them may have found out when she tried to join the Army. Both my parents most likely found out when they joined the military. So, even if you never donate blood, there may come a time for it to become necessary to find out.
O+, but I’m not allowed to donate anymore since I lived in England for a couple of years in the mid-'80s.
I’m AB neg, and gave (IIRC) 4 or 5 units before they started rejecting my blood.
“See, Mr. Blank, there’s this liver enzyme, and you really shouldn’t worry about it, but your’s came back positive and we had to pitch your blood. It could be ANYthing. You may have had too much to drink the night before, you may be fighting a minor infection, or it could be Simple Chronic Halitosis…but we won’t take it cause it might also be syphilis. But don’t worry, it’s probably nothing…oh, and don’t come back.”
$150 out of pocket for a blood screen to show it was, in fact, nothing. 12 months later my next blood draw was pitched for the same reason and I figured there were just some things in life I wasn’t meant to do.
I’m O pos, so is my elder son. I can’t remember off the top of my head what the baby is, but I’m sure they told me.
My ex-boyfriend was an AB negative. They LOVED him, but he was a big wuss and was afraid to donate. I dragged him in one time, this big strong military man, and he went limp in the chair and white as a sheet. Didn’t stop them from taking his blood.
A-
Another O- here. They’ve never called me to come in, but they do move me to the front of the line when they see that I’m O-.
O neg. Yes, the Red Cross has my number and they call it frequently.
I think my bro and sis are something else, tho’.
Unintentionally Blank I had the exact same thing happen to me. It’s a shame really, to let this glorious fount of O- blood just sit here in these veins. I don’t mind the needles and the doctor says everything is hunky dorey with me health-wise, but alas it seems we have been blacklisted. I guess I can get another tattoo with a clear conscience though.
my blood type is a rich, delicious, full bodied, tasty O-
oops, sorry, let my vampire side out a little too much in the first line…
now this thread is making me all hungry…
mmm…blood
I am A-. I never really cared until I got pregnant and was told I needed RhoGam shots to prevent antibodies in case baby was +. My husband didn’t know his blood type but I knew if he was negative then all was well and I could avoid painful shots, right? Not so. When he asked if he needed to get tested to see if I needed the shots, we were told I would get them no matter what blood type he was. Wha? says I. Well it seems that they like to prevent situations where the assumed father is not really the father and I would have needed the shots after all. So I was getting the needle no matter what.
I was a little annoyed at this, I mean I understand the idea that maybe a mother is hiding something and this way she can just say well, I had to get the shots no matter what and avoid suspicion and endangering herself and the baby. But I knew my husband was the only possible father, and I don’t like needles. I don’t know what would happen if I outright refused the shots, I mean they said I had to have them but it’s not like they could force them on me, could they?
I didn’t put up a fuss because chances were he was positive anyway, but if I knew for sure he was negative I might have tried to fight it a little more. And in the end the shots weren’t that bad. It’s just the idea of “you have to get these shots because maybe he’s not the father…” Gah.
Turns out my husband is also 0+, so I guess the baby couldn’t be anything else. Sorta handy, that. Both kids have the same blood type as we do, for when there’s blood needed.
Does the CMV- refer to cytomegalovirus? And, if so, does it mean you’ve never had it? Which would mean most of the rest of us have?
I looked that the web site referenced earlier and it didn’t explain CMV.
Me, I’m B+, and I have no idea about anything else.
I’m learning a lot from this thread. I didn’t know anything about the rarer types. Thanks!
